When To Test

Simple question. At what time do you start counting down after you eat? Let’s say you start eating breakfast at 7:26 am and you finish at 7:40 am . Would you check your BG at 10:00 am or 10:30 ish? Or is it earlier? See this is where I think I have been checking at the wrong times all the while. At lunch, I always check my BG at 3:00pm because I eat around 12:30pm.

Help!

Thanks.

My husband and son check 4 hours after they receive insulin. They also get insulin b4 they eat for better control. Do you check your sugar every 2.5 hours or just at every meal and bedtime, plus as needed.

i do it two ways, sometimes on accident sometimes on purpose.
Check, finish preparing meal then inject insulin, eat, then check after two hours from original check
or
check, eat, take insulin, then check after 2.5 hours.

I’ve been testing before a meal, twice a day. I have T2. That seemed to be what my doctor instructed, but she sucks, and I’ll ask my new doctor when I meet her.

Curious, why type 2 specifically (unless your taking insulin)?

I check my blood sugar exactly 2 and 3 hours after the end of my meal and have been doing so since diagnosis. So far I’d say it’s been going okay. So let’s say I finish eating a meal at 8am, I’ll test at 10 and 11am. A friend told me that it doesn’t matter much as long as you are consistent with the testing time. That way you’ll be able to more accurately draw out any trends or patterns in blood sugar readings. Oh I should add that I also test before a meal, and before and after exercise. The exercise bit is more because I’ve been having some trouble with higher numbers after I work out and I want to make sure it’s a recurring thing before I ring up the diabetes clinic to see what I should do.

I was told that you count two hours from when the first bite hits your mouth. I check before meals and bedtime, and sometimes 2 hours after a meal or if something doesn’t feel right.

I’m a T2. I check two hours after the first bite of my meals. I also check upon waking up, an hour after exercise and before going to bed.

Hi Carley, for a general meal I would test at 9:25, if i am testing my reaction to a new food I would check at 7:55, 8:25, 8:55 and 9:25, more if I wasn’t dropping yet. It gives me a curve of how I am reacting to a specific food.

I follow this pattern as well. Though, I normally try to take insulin first right after I test. But sometimes either I am too hungry, or feeling a little hypo or just not sure how much carbs I will have.

Oh, ok… I figured it was that…

It’s funny, when my PCP thought I was type 2, he told me to only test once a day in the mornings… LOL. I used to verbally fight him every visit, because he did not want to write a script for more strips… Thank god for Tudiabetes, Dlife, and the ADA… We all would have been a lost bunch…

My mum is a T2 for 25 years. on shots for 15 years now.
she also found it useful to test just before going to bed.
just in case she has had a big full day of activities, and is running a low BG just before bed.

Thanks everyone all of these responses have been very helpful.
