Why do my wrists and fingers ache?

Last night, I know I underestimated my carbs for dinner, and ended up a bit high after dinner and right until bedtime. I took my normal amount of Lantus, and woke up with a 9 (not so bad). What was strange was my fingers and wrists ached all night, and still felt very stiff and sore in the morning. Is this an effect of high blood sugar? Does anyone experience this?

This has not been the first time I’ve had this, but it was more common prior to my recent diagnosis, when my sugars were extremely out of whack. When I mentioned it once to my endo, he seemed to automatically say “carpul tunnel syndrome” but does this connect to diabetes? I read somewhere that both are auto-immune disorders. Are diabetics more susceptible to other auto immune disorders?

My run this morning loosened things up a bit, and put my sugars back in a happy range, but the feeling is still there.

Hi Randy, When I wake up I have pain in the knuckles of my fingers, and they are very tight, as the day progresses they loosen up then in the evening, they start hurting once again. I have called this arthritis, and never thought of it being anything else. my Oncologist says, a blood test would tell my doctor what kind of inflamation it is, and they could probably tell me which anti-inflamatory to take.

Hi Randy welcome! I looked at your page to see how long you were dxed and found you were recently dxed. I’ve had the big D for many years and have experienced the pain you describe. My pain occurs when I’m hypo I also get tingling and numbness when I’m low. Having D so long I have incurred some complications like Arthritis because D effects the cartiledge (sp?) in the joints. The longer we have high bs the more complications that occur. But do mention to your doctor what is happening.

Keep in mind you could have another autoimmune disorder since you are diabetic, the D puts us at risk. I know when my sugars were out of control and before I was on meds for my myositis and sarcoid’s that I would get this pain too. Higher blood sugars can increase inflammatory factors in your blood so definitely mention it to the doc so they can run some blood panels to see if your inflammatory factors are elevated. It could be nothing but let the docs rule that out…

There have been some rumblings of this being affected by the D. I’m in terrible pain with tendonitis in both hands. It’s not arthritis and the rheumatologist confirms that. There are so many stressors contributing to my hand condition that I can"t pin it on one thing.
