The most promising research to cure T-1Diabetes is taking place in Boston; see; http://www.faustmanlab.org/
This research uses a generic drug and that is why there is no financial support from drug companies.
Here is my plan;
We pick a date and on that date we all make at least one phone call to our local news stations requesting coverage of the Faustman Lab research to cure T-1 diabetes.
Then the next day we all make one call to our government reps requesting funding for this research.
That's all! Two phone calls. And if you're feeling ambitious ask your friends and families to make the same two phone calls.
Politicians will get on-board because it's election time and publicity like this would be good for them.
Best outcome; The media coverage promotes funding. The publicity makes it more difficult for drug/pharm companies to bury the research. Three to five years from now this disease is cured.
Worst outcome; The media coverage fails to go virul and we've all made two phone calls that didn't pay off. Big deal!
