Does anyone find it strange that Hypos will wake me up in the middle of the night? I've been on other sites and night time hypos seem to be a lot of people's biggest fear. I'll type in that I don't check at night because I have always woken up from a serious hypo, but then I'll get people tell me that I have no way of knowing that I catch them since I don't check. The few time that I DO check at night, I've never been surprised by a low. I've has a few 65-70 and slept through it, but I could never stay asleep under 55 or so.
Yes.. as you get older you become more Immune to them -Hypo Unawarness And it takes lower and lower #'s to feel it , etc.. and from Neuropathy as well Sometimes you can Run things Alittle High for a Few days and then get back down to better control and you will feel them alitt Better when they get down into the 60's.
Even before having trouble w/hypo unawareness I had times where I slept through severe hypos. It can be scary, so if you are blessed to be able to wake up wonderful! Sometimes I will wake up and know I need to treat a low, other times I am seriously low and cannot do anything about it, no strength to get up, reach sugar, etc. I have "trained" myself to wake up during the night and I now just get up and do a finger stick for safety, even w/using my CGMS. Works for me anyway! But with pumping, the nightime lows are no longer as frequent and best of all not as severe.
I never used to. As a child and teenager, I suffered many overnight seizures from severe hypos. But now I wake up and it's such a strange feeling! I feel so exhausted and yet unable to sleep. I'll toss and turn for a couple of minutes before realizing why I'm awake. I still have a hard time though going to sleep with a good blood sugar, for fear that I'll drop overnight and not wake up! My doctors know my evening blood sugars are definitely a sensitive topic.
I always wake up (well so far!) when I have night time hypos. I feel really hot and then try and move the blanket (thinkin im just hot) but arm feels weak and cant move the blanket, thats when I know, so far the lowest Ive woken up at was 1.8mmol which was pretty scary ( I had had too much alcohol though and was a combination of things stressing me out!). Hopfully I keep waking / get them sorted!
Before I became hypo unaware I used to always wake up when low overnight. Usually with my heart pounding and hot. But I get hot when I'm high also...like my skin is on fire. Sometimes I would wake up low, realize that I was low, but basically had to convince myself to get up to test/treat....you're low, get up...no, so sleepy...no GET UP. It was like I just couldn't make my body move. Scary stuff.
Now going low at night scares me more than anything, even with my Dexcom. The Dex has saved me more than once. I had gotten my basal set really well and was routinely waking up at the same level I went to bed. Lately I've been dropping 60 points from bedtime to morning (gradually) so am having to dial back. I'm letting it run higher at bedtime now because I'm scared not to until I get this figured out again.
If only we could just get everything dialed in and it would just stay the same. Even for just a little while. Is that asking too much?
I would suspect that most diabetics wake up from almost all of their overnight hypos, but there are two big concerns. The first concern I have is, will this be the hypo I do not wake up from? From experience (2 times) I can tell you it is no fun to wake up and find EMTs in your bedroom as your brain slowly starts to remove the big hypo fog.
The other big concern is that waking up hypo and very disoriented. Having everything dark, being disoriented and having an adrenal kick can be problematic and scary. I have woken up hypo and disoriented and chosen to trudge to the kitchen (instead of treating with lifesavers at my bedside) and stare in the fridge for a while. Then I eat too much and wake up way too high.
Not hypounaware , and since I got a pump and CGMS, I find I tend to float around 60-65 for an hour or if I am low, inactive, (Like at the computer) and do not have bolus on board. I have awakened every time that I can remember if I am hypo while sleeping at night . I have weird dreams, hallucinations and weird feelings, heart pounding, disorientation. I immediately get up.and treat. I keep glucose tabs and Capri-sun bags by the bed. Now if I cannot reisist the urge to lie down when Hypo in the daytime, I may pass out. That has happened a few times for me, but all in the daytime. Never slept through a hypo at night in 43 years.
