It happened to me years ago in the mid 1960s, I was on 1 shot a day, must have been some sort of NPH, long before the days of MDI. I got up as normal, made my pot of tea, tested my urine, did the shot, then thought “I really don’t feel well”, so I went back to bed & fell asleep. I woke mid afternoon, screaming & kicking my legs, I had sweated so much the mattress was soaked. Took a few minutes to realize what was wrong, of course I had no sugar by the bed, so I dragged myself to the kitchen, after eating sugar & juice, I think I felt better in about 15 minutes. I was alone in the apartment at the time. But I have never forgotten that. I’m not sure what I did to myself as I had a terrible bruise on my ribs.
Marps,
back when my sugar used to get really low at night i would almost pass out sometimes and it took my a minute to realize what was happening and that it was because of my sugar, i didnt worry about checking it i just grabbed some gatorade or juice and drank it as fast as i could. glad you are ok and hope it never happens again
jen,
im not sure what it was but theres been times ive been 29 and wouldnt even know it if i wouldnt have checked so it had to have been really low probably under 15. and ive had that happen to me a few times recently my sugar being low then having to many carbs to bring it up and then it going high like last night it was 49 then i had an orange and ate some stuff and it went to 187 and i rarely even go over 115. then i just took 5 units and went to sleep and woke up at 90. i like mine to be a little low rather than a little high so i can just have a snack instead of having to take another shot and when its high i feel like crap and dont have any energy. but thats why i cant tell when im low now too
I could honestly say I have been VERY close to this TWICE. I try to take mine 15-20 mins early and sometimes I don’t eat dinner until late so I might be sleepy and fall asleep. When I start feeling weird the thought pops into my head and I check my BG and be oh crap! Gotta eat something! I TOTALLY forgot!
Hi Mike. Happened to me a lot. (35 years on MDI)!! Scary when going low while sleeping. When you wake up and have a dextrose drip in your arm!!! Something happens to our brains when we go low. I sometimes can’t talk or walk. Sometimes I “fit” almost like an epileptic. Thank God for family and the Medics!!
All the best
Riana
Yep been there too. I am a medic so how this happened I had no clue at the time but we found the reason. My pump had broke and so I had to use lantus over night and in the morning as I split the dose and then of couse my pump arrived that day and I hooked it right up without thinking about the lantus on board. I was working thank God and so I wake up to a butt load of medics and firefighters and my fire chief! very embarassing for me but learned a vaulable lesson pay attention to what you do! my sugar was 20.
