A Day at the Race!

Congrats AR, great time, glad you had a smooth time.

Post it here, please!

I am cutting her some slack as I'm walking around in a post-race fog myself! I should have made the "straight" people take one with my phone but I was in a pre-race fog myself...

CONGRATULATIONS!! what a great balancing act that you handled so well, give yourself more credit! that is an amazing accomplishment. your body is probably a fine tunes machine at this point but do you have to be extra diligent for lows the night or day after a huge run? you have a CGM so probably not so much of a worry. in any case, rest up and bask in your accomplishment! amy

Not really "extra" as I'm always diligent about that! I'd turned up the AM basal bump a couple of days before the race as it seemed like the pre-race jitters had cranked that up even more but it's been running low since so I'll turn it back down a notch tonight and get back to normal. I'm glad I took this week off so I can sort of veg out. It feels a lot better to have run a decent race (although not as decent as Soosie and Dane!) than it did last year w/ the blowup. I feel for all the croaking people I ran by.

Here's the pix from drsoosie!

ready for blast off! It is in the top 5 experiences, right after being married and having a kid. It is definitely unique.

Class weather, looks like a beautiful place to live.

Congratulations! I really admire runners, especially those who manage BG while running.

Not that I'm an expert but pretty much everyone was like "it's *perfect* conditions!" It wasn't quite that sunny on race day but the clouds made the conditions very moderate.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone! I was heavy and started walking in 2005 or 6, probably 5 but I'm a bit old. The first step is the hardest but, once you start, if you keep going, you can do it. I saw a gal with an Oskar Pistorius leg at the end and was like "what are you griping about with your insulin pump" but then I dropped my Gatorade Shirt (*bling* for doing their study...) into a puddle of beer. Life is full of ups and downs. It was a lot of work but it's great to build an up. I hope Dane turns up too. I'd like to hear more about his and drsoosie's races went!

Once again....I agree completely...marriage, kids and marathon for sure!!!!

acidrock, drsoosie and Dane, very inspirational! Thanks for sharing especially your approaches to running a T1 marathon and data collected. Very interesting, even to a T2 not on insulin like me. Love the pics.......more more!!!

I think that's about all we've got, until the official race pics come out. They have tons of photographers out there. I dunno if they get paid per pic or only if they sell one but they are all over the place and taking pics left and right. I dunno who goes through them all but, hopefully in another day or two, they'll have them available, ID'ed by bib#. I had some ok ones last year, none of them really show how miserable I was (which is good!). That probably means I'll look ghastly this year? LOL

Erin2 also ran the race. We were gonna connect but she had a group and we weren't quite able to get it together.

Congratulations. I've done a few half marathons but not a big one. That is a big achievement!

Gosh guys…where do I begin…first let me tell the group that meeting acid rock and drsoosie was one of the numerous highlights of the event. On saturday, after picking my brother and I up near the airport and bringing us into town, AR took us to Wildberry’s cafe where we met up with drsoosie and mr.drsoosie. We all actually ate a fairly healthy breakfast on Saturday. This was my last full meal prior to the run on Sunday morning. Next time I would probably have a light meal and skip the junk I ate in the late afternoon. For numerous reasons, I might also skip the Miami/Notre Dame game (we left at half)! The walk around Grant Park was fantastic and a real foundation for the rest of the weekend. I knew exactly where to go for my corral on Sunday morning. The weather was a bit cold for this Florida boy but once the run started I felt fine. BS was fairly high at 250 to start but I had bolused and the bs dropped to between 135-150 for most of the race…no issues! Used my cgm throughout the race but never actually tested until after the finish. I ate 6 GUs (1 every 4-5 miles) during the race. Only drank water, no Gatorade, during the race. The event was incredible with over 45000 runners and 1.5 million spectators cheering the entire length of the course…and what a beautiful city! I still had some mental struggles around 18 but cranked up some “angry” music until 25 where the crowds brought me home. Everyone finished healthy and strong…I was very happy with my first marathon 4:20! I agree with drsoosie, one of the biggest highlights in my 55 years!

Way to be organized on the carbs and haul some serious ■■■ Dane! Great run!! I'm very glad we met and spent that time to hang out. I was so bonkers on Saturday that it was great to chill out with you guys!

Okay now that Acid and Dane outlined their runs I shall do mine. I too found the breakfast (meeting Acid and Dane) a highlight of the trip. I also really appreciated getting my bearings by walking around the park the day before. I have to say the nerves were building at that point not to mention my concern about how cold I would be in the morning waiting to take off. I live in LA where it has been in the 100's so you can imagine my worries. One of the greatest surprises was my son taking a train from Michigan (where he goes to school at U of M) and knocking on my hotel door for a big surprise. So on race day I awoke at 4:30 with a BG of 45 (YIKES!) I'm on mDI and dropped my basal, but my decreased food the day before must have been a problem. Got the blood up to 78 before eating a third of a bowl of oatmeal and coffee with a one unit bolus. I tested right before my group took off at 148 so was happy with that. I ate my honey stingers every 4-5 miles throughout the race. My husband and son found me at mile 3, 13 and at the finish line. My cousins were at mile 9. I found the hardest part of the race between mile 13 to 18. I had a surge at 18 that carried me home.I finished at 4:29.51. My legs feel great, no blisters or callouses or anything!!! I have been on cloud nine ever since. Oh yeah...my BG was 160 at the end. I never felt the need to test while running. Truly, truly an amazing experience and I'm already strategizing my next event!!!!

Congrats and way to go AR, dr.soosie and Dane. I would have flopped the first few yards. I can only dream of running now but I so enjoyed reading up on your successful runs. Thank goodness for those empowering surges. Wonderful that all of you could get together for the event also. Good photos.
