Accident

Last year, June 21 of 2007 I was in a bad car accident because of my diabetes. I was getting off of work and I didn’t realize my BG was low it was probably around 12-15 I got in my jeep and I drove home. I had a siezure While I was driving and I ran off the road and into a tree. I was in ICU for 1 and a half months and I was also in a rehab hospital for a few months after it. I had 3 compund fractures in my left leg and shattered my right. I was in a weheelchair for four months all together and I was in a comma for the whole time I was in ICU… I am lucky to say the least. I also fractured my pelvis and dislocated and broke my hips… I now have four Titanium Rods in my legs 2 in each. I also had a TBI (tramtic brain injury) Ive been though a lot. And I coming along great now… But I could have easily avoided this by checking my BG often. But i didn’t and I payed the price… THankfully Im Alive… So please learn from my mistake and pay close attention to your diabetes…

Wow Russ, what an awful experience you had to go through! Glad to hear you survived, and that you are encouraging others to test frequently. We all know that at one time or another, it could be us. Thanks for the reminder.

Russ,
First, I must say I am so sorry this happened to you but thankfully you’re alive! It looks like you are determined to turn your negative into a positive!! I think driving while low happens more often than we want to believe. Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone~ All too often this has NOT been stressed enough by our doctors. I believe I actually read in a book or online not to drive with a BG below 70 but have never been told by a physician; even so, I am guilty of driving when my BG has been below 60.

Russ, thanks for speaking so openly about your accident! This must have been a very difficult process. I’m so glad that you became part of this community!

Hey Russ i just learned the lesson you did in June but i was not injured. I hit someone and did not know it. My blood sugar was 51 when i pulled over by the cops. I have no recollection of the drive home, the accident, the cops until i was treated by EMS. Now i test a minimum of 10 times a day. I am glad you decided to share your story I have also in a previous blog. I am glad you are doing better i hope things continue to improve. Remember we are here for you to vent.

Wow that seems crazy. My little boy just found out that he has type 1 diabetes in January of this year. He is only 18 months old. It has been alot of work, but we are managing good. It is difficult being a single mom, but i have my sister who is also living with type 1 diabetes. She is 25 and has diabetes for 15 years. We are close and lean on each other for support. So do you have any kids? Well any advice that you have for someone who is new to all of this I would love to hear. Hope to talk to you soon. Samantha
