Advice needed! medical insurance lapse coming up

Okay, so, I am no longer employed by company A. My health ins will expire May 31. I got another job and should start next week. So, company B’s med ins will start 90 days after my date of hire. I am trying to get all of my rx’s filled by May 31st, and most are 3 month supplies but, I think I will be running out during the last few weeks of those 3 months sans insurance. Cobra is CRAZY expensive, so that is not an option. Does anybody pay for one of those obama plans, a family one, that covers their insulin and diabetes meds? I know that it goes by income, hub and I both work but, I am so scared of what to do next. I am going to call hub’s HR dept tomorrow and see what his ins can cost us but, everything is so damn expensive!! I am really the most of scared of running out of insulin…

Most employer provided health insurance do not have exclusions and should cover you from day 1. You may be required to pay deductibles for the new policy, but that is a separate issue. Please call HR for the the new company to clarify their new policy. If you have not had a period where you are not covered by health insurance it would seem that you should not have any risk of being excluded.

You might just buy one month of Cobra and get your 3 month refills at the end of that month. But you’re still taking the risk that you’ll find yourself in need of care during the gap. The out of pockets for the cheaper Obama care plans can be pretty brutal so you might find that the Cobra turns out to be best way to go if you aren’t eligible for subsidies.

Instead if Cobra, you can get on your husbands plan until your new insurance kicks in. Sinceyou lost your insurance due to being unemployed, your husbands insurance will accept you, without you waiting until the anniversary date. Have your husband check with his HR. THIS IS WHAT I WPDID WHEN I WAS IN THE SAME PREDICAMENT. Good luck.

You may think this is silly and unhelpful but when I recently reduced my total daily carb limit, I needed much less insulin. I went from 40 units per day total daily dose to 27 units per day. It occurred to me that if my back were against the wall, I could extend my supply of insulin quite a bit. I would understand if you thought this impractical, but just an idea …

I have no idea what your eating style is but if you ever thought about eating low carb, you now have good motivation to try it.

Can you see if you can get some free samples from your Dr.? Mine has given me some in the past and also given me a coupons for free insulin. I’m going to be facing the same problem but I think I’ll have enough stocked up. Good luck!
