Amount of carbs

Morning everyone I'm slowly slowly getting on the road to winning only because of you!!!! thank you. Please can you tell me what amount of carbs we are allowed per day?

May God bless you each

I eat a bit more than that 140G of carbs (avg) on my pump. If I ate what the dietitian rx'ed, it would be more like 180-270. I finished one of Gary Taubes' books, "Why We Get Fat" which are about the history of food, medicine and science and he suggests that 75 is about the most that anyone recommended to lose weight, which I think also leads to the flatter BG responses?

I only eat about 30-40G of carbs during the day and then eat the rest at night. This gives me a pretty good "benchmark" to know that my pump rates/ ratios are set correctly. I think that it's easier to manage BG w/ less carbs as the inputs are smaller and any errors in carb counting or insulin calculation won't result in wild swings as much with smaller doses of food and insulin, if that makes sense?

I generally have about 30 carbs for breakfast, and average 50-60 each for lunch and dinner (and I snack - and bolus - periodically).

I saw my endo recently and asked if he thought I should be trying to lower my carb intake. He didn't see a reason to recommend doing so. He did say that if I'm interested in it, to try it for a few days and see how it goes.

This guy is a really good doc. REALLY good. So my takeaway from that conversation was that either (1) he sees no benefit to a low carb diet [though he DOES want me to work on those postprandial spikes, either by superbolusing or paying more attention to glycemic index], or (2) want me to learn for myself that low-carb is the way to go, not to learn from him teaching me.

But his initial reaction was that low-carb isn't necessary, you just need to have the proper insulin, at the proper times, in the proper amounts to manage BG.

Thank you

excellent now I know.

thanks

thanks all

Everyone is different. Some of us may have it easy, we are "whiz" at counting carbs and can get the correct timing and dosing for our insulin and eat as much pizza as we want. Then there are others (like me). I am insulin resistant and intolerant of carbs. Any time I have a meal with significant carbs, the result becomes a total cr*pshoot. And I also am aggressive about trying to lower my blood sugar. And for me lowering the carbs in my diet is a central part of achieving tight blood sugar control.

This is not about "allowing" carbs, it is about your choice. You should choose to eat an amount of carbs that enables you to meet your blood sugar and health goals and keeps you happy and satisfied. If you are really serious about your blood sugar, it is worth exploring some steps in lowering your carb intake.

ps. And not all carbs are necessarily the same, for some of us wheat is worse than even sugar and certainly we react differently to complex carbs (versus simple carbs).

feel free to add to it. I'm a moderate low carber, try not to go over 25 or 30 per meal.

I eat about 100 per day. Some times more and some times less. It depends on my physical activity and what my meter says. As others have said, more carbs = more insulin = more chance for BG issues and weight gain. I eat what ever want, but I usually don't want to deal with a huge carb load. The carbs I do eat are normally complex carbs. By eating this way I can normally bolus with 2 o 3 units. The most I have ever used at one time is 4 units, but I have made a correction bolus from time to time. I have been able to keep my A1c between 5.6 and 5.4 for the last year. I rarely see a bg over 145 or under 65. Most of the time I am between 95 and 125.

You are allowed whatever your body can handle. Some people can't handle more than 30g or so a day. Some people can handle upwards of 200g. Eat, and test your blood sugar - that is the only sure fire way to see what you are 'allowed'.
