My son’s pump warranty is up in April and do at his clinic appointment we asked about pump models for Animas. We were told that Animas is for sale. That sucks if they don’t find a buyer because then what? We’ll have a $7000 pump that we can’t get supplies nor support for. Has anyone heard of Animas being up for sale?
There is a credible rumor that J&J isn’t happy with the performance of their diabetes portfolio and might try and find a buyer. Knowing how big companies operate, my guess would be that if they fail to find a buyer, they would still support the existing patients even if they decided to exit the pump business, since the PR would be terrible.
If they find a buyer, then the new owner would be making the support decisions. No one can say how long something will be supported, but in the medical tech arena buying and selling divisions happens on a semi-regular basis. As a patient, trying to get service, it is a bummer when a company you have come to trust decides to go in a different direction.
It is very disappointing as my son really likes this pump. We will have to speak with a rep and have a couple of months to make a decision. Thanks for your reply.
Any other company that has gone out of business or whatever, still arranges for supplies and service through the last date of warranties expiring. I’m really wanting a Ping now, and this slight unsteadiness makes me want one much sooner than I normally would…
On the Medtronic web site there is a bulletin saying: Attention Animas & Roche Customers with details of an offer. I know Roche is no longer selling pumps in USA, does Medtronic know something or are they just fanning rumors?
I would say that they wouldn’t publicly state something that isn’t in the public domain. They have a very effective group of lawyers who advise on this stuff within the company. I would put that statement down to marketing to patients and trying to pick up market share.
I spoke to one of the Senior Animas UK reps at a meeting last week. They are not really sure what J&J are planning. At the moment it’s a “re-evaluation” so they could keep going under J&J or sell of the Tech division to another buyer. Whatever, this means that plans are on hold for the near future. They do have a predictive low glucose suspend (hybrid closed loop) model in development. How all this will affect the timing of its introduction is unclear, but it could result in a delay.
Laura, the Asante Snap was discontinued without notice. No support. No supplies. No warranty obligations were met. So, it happens.
TSlim had something similar. I think it’s just marketing ploys.
Fingers crossed, because I am enjoying most of my vibe.
Oh, sorry. I thought they kept the supply division open awhile. I’m thinking though with as olong as Animas has been around and since it is under the J and J name now, it will still have a functioning supply division. I hope so, I am trying to buy a new Ping while I still can!
I don’t think there is any prospect of a sudden shutdown. Some of the other pump manufacturers who pulled out of the business with little notice (Cosmo, Asante etc.) were small independents whereas Animas are a division of one of the world’s largest medical/pharma/tech companies.
If you are looking for a new Animas pump, are you aware that the new Vibe Plus is scheduled for release in the very near future? This is basically a Vibe but with communication to the Dexcom G5 and the latest software. If you are looking for a sensor augmented pump, it might be worth waiting for. The old G4-enabled Vibe did not have the remote communication that was a feature of the Ping. However because the G5 communicates by Bluetooth, you might want to check with Animas if the Vibe Plus will have the remote control feature restored
That’s what I thought re: Johnson and Johnson.
I dont know if I even qualify but I did always like my Animas the best.
I’m just shooting for a Ping system as I dont use CGM.
No answers yet from the medical supplier.
If you are not interested in using the remote control, the Vibe supposedly has a somewhat easier menu system than the Ping as the recommended bolus will populate the bolus field with one button press.
Settling for the Ping and hoping for the best!
Yep, as of now, there’s been no decision made by JnJ what will happen – everything is a possibility, but hopefully we don’t lose the Animas/OneTouch pump as a choice.
All TBD… same as with Tandem, currently.
As far as warranty obligations go, you may be right–wasn’t an issue for me. Re supplies, I was told they would continue to issue them for as long as they lasted. I put in one order to supplement what I already had because why not, but I ended up going back to my Medtronic before running through them all. I actually still have about six weeks’ worth in my D drawer. The T1 creed, Never throw anything out! You might need it! is very strong in this one.
I’ve kept my 10-year-old Cozmo and two boxes of expired cartridges for just this reason. Now that my Ping is dead and I want to wait for the Vibe that supports the G5, I may well decide to go back on my Cozmo for the next few months rather than put up with MDI…
I got my new Ping and am soooo happy to be back with this pump. I think my Revel was malfunctioning or something because everything is back to ‘normal’ now, if there is such a thing. Service has been good too! Lots of follow up, though I did have to tell them I don’t need pump training. I have to order supplies through Byram so I don’t think I will be working with the estore anymore.
