LOL… Great response!
Most definitely eat with the drinking… Also, depending on the drink will dictate whether you need to shoot up or not. I typically drink Vodka Press so there are minimal carbs… However, if I do a Cosmo, I may need a shot, depending on how they are made. Just check your level every few hours and keep up with it. Overall, I have lows when I drink. For me, it’s been an on going learning experience.
This week I started doing the shots in the legs for the first time… It hurts far less than sides… Amazing! I was expecting it to be worse than it actually was… I highly recommend trying it… but I guess you are on the pump so that may be different. I second the vodka choice! LOL
For me: A beer is like eating a slice of white bread. Wine doesn’t do much to my BG. The kind of cocktails I like–not sweet–definitely put my liver to work and keep it from producing glucose, which can create serious lows many hours later if I’m not careful. Those are the times that I really love my Dex.
I do infusion sets with the pump all over my leg, but I don’t really like it there. I do it for variety and rotation but i find them much more comfortable on my sides and stomach. Logistically I find it easier too- sleeping, bathroom etc! You’ll see once you have some tubing;)
I am getting a loaner Dexcom inserted today. It wasn’t so much Courtney’s anxieties that have me a little anxious about the insertion.(I saw a picture she posted of the insertion, scary- thanks a lot Courtney! ) It actually was the Dexcom video tutorial, there seems to be a number of steps with a good bit of fussing around what with squeezing the area and a bit of twisting and what not. Seems that it has to be rather irritating to the area.
I am very interested in getting one for myself - Jan, that insurance thing. I am wondering how I can insert it in the back of the arm- I love that spot for the Ping inserts and think it would be my first choice for the CGM, but it sure looks like you need two hands to insert the CGM, are you folks inserting all by yourself into the backs of your arms? Skills. My job is very very physical with lots and lots of bending and lifting. Combined with a shorter mid-section and so the belly area is not that great for me.

I also had problems with insertion. I found the EMLA CREAM, (lidocain 2.5% prilocaine 2.5%) works wonders. Leave it on 20 minutes before insertion, wipe off COMPLETELY ( or sensor will not adhere well) and then I fel NOTHING!!!
I can show you how the trainer does self-inserting on the arm…not by example but pretend=)
Well, Options?
- Get your Weight up-- More Fat helps
2- You got over using the Test meter right?
3- You got over using Syringes, right?
4- Maybe have someone else do it? Out of sight is out of mind?
and if push comes to shove? It’s not the End of the world you just cannot do this… Forget about using it… We have T1’s with it for over 40-50+ yrs and still kicking…
and you can bet they had very high BG’s and Alot of hypo’s along those yrs…
I remember when My Mother Had it, 175 was the Goal for many yrs… and very few did even that…
Motivation… Some like me, needed More Motivation to Test alot more and take more shots…to strive for 5% A1c’s ( was ave 7%) and now ave 5.5’s… Guess what gave me the Motivation? Getting Neuropathy signs… severe Leg Cramps in the Nite, etc… and ? Getting a Vitrus Eye Hemmorage… Bleeder …
reading about getting Complications isn’t enough… many of us have to have something happen to motivate us more, to do more…
It’s been 5 yrs now and everything is Honky Dorey…
It doesn’t hurt but it stresses me out too. I think the flaw with dexcom is that you control the speed at which you insert the needle - at least that’s what freaks me out. I go too slow most of the time and that hurts more.
With the insertion for the animas pump, once you click it, it automatically pierces through your skin - you have no control on how quick or slow which actually makes the process better. Dexcom needs to implement something like that.
I think that would make me more nervous.... But I don't know yet for sure since I have another month before I get mine...
