Does anyone know, or can anyone recommend, a good book for non-diabetics to read and education themselves about diabetes and caring for someone with diabetes? I would like my partner to become more educated about what I go through on a daily basis and about what she can do to help me.
A few months back there was a topic posted asking the community this very question… here is the Diabetes Reads list that was generated! I hope you find some helpful resources…Cheers!
I’m not sure how appropriate it would be for someone without diabetes who didn’t know much about the disease, but The Book of Better by Chuck Eichten provides a good overview of what someone with diabetes has to think about and consider and experiences on a daily basis, without going into the heavy detail of formulas or worksheets that a lot of other books do. It might be a good book for someone to get a sense of what diabetes is all about. It also has a lot of interesting graphis and is a quick read.
I haven’t read The Book of Better (but it looks good - may be on my purchasing list!). Another book I’ve heard recommended (but haven’t read) is Cheating Destiny by James S Hirsch. It’s a little older, but I’ve heard good things about it.
Also, poking around, I saw Balancing Diabetes: Conversations About Finding Happiness and Living Well by Kerri Sparling, whose writing is usually quite good.
Thanks for all the great book suggestions. I just ordered The Book of Better and I’ll read it before passing it on to my partner. I already have Think Like a Pancreas, but I think it’s too much inside baseball for a non-diabetic and I don’t want her to get overwhelmed with discussions of how to calculate I:G ratios and the like.
I’m a little surprised that there aren’t any books out there specifically targeted at non-diabetics who have a diabetic in their life. Perhaps there’s an opportunity there.
