I am newly diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 41. For the past year or so I have been gaining weight despite running daily and being pretty good about diet. I realize gaining weight with diabetes isn’t the norm, but I am told this happened to my grandmother as well. Endo tested my thyroid and it is within normal range, if a little low.
Anyone else had this experiences and have any advice? Ask is this started BEFORE I went in insulin.
It is common, especially for adult women, to have both Type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto's disease (frequently linked autoimmune diseases--I was diagnosed with both at age 35). Many women here on TuD found that being a little on the low thyroid side actually meant they needed treatment. Sorry to welcome you to the club, but glad you found TuD!
I gained a lot of weight before my diagnosis due to a combination of things--taking steroids for my RA and my thyroid medications needing to be adjusted.
My doctors kept saying my thyroid was in range. And then in one appointment, they increased my thyroid medication and diagnosed me at having diabetes.
Within weeks, I was losing weight and I'm still losing weight--I've lost over 60 lbs. My A1C is coming down from my diagnosis 6.9 to 6.1 but my BGs fluctuate drastically. My endo still refuses to put me on insulin, instead opting for diet and exercise which was keeping me in range, but it's no longer working.
My T3 and T4 are in range, but my TSH is low. I originally was diagnosed with Graves disease at 14, received radioactive iodine and have been hypothyroid ever since.
Just curious ...what are the lab reference ranges since labs can differ? I was treated when my TSH was barely normal .8 and my T4 was .9 or 1.0, but I had a hard time finding a doctor who would treat low normal levels.
I see some of you already suggested thyroid and YES I was one of those who put on weight before/after diagnosis due to hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto’s.
