I’m new to the omnipod - if my BG is running low from say 6:00 to 8:00, do I set the basal profile to be different from 6:00 to 8:00, or do I have to back of the insulin action time (~3 hours) when setting the time in the basal profile?
One other question- how is the basal delivered? Once an hour, once every 5 minutes, ???
The insulin is delivered as a trickle 24/7. If you are using Humalog or Novolog, the insulin peaks in about an hour, so if you want insulin delivery to be less from 6:00 to 8:00, you could try lowering the delivery from 5:00 to 7:00. I think adjusting 3 hours prior will be too early. Once you figure out how far in advance to adjust for the way your insulin works in your body, you will always know how to make changes to your basal as needed.
Hi JoeS. For Caleb, if he was low from 6 to 8, I would lower his basal between 4 to 6. That is what works for us, but adjusting between 5 to 7 as Don suggests might work equally effectively.
The basal is delivered in pulses. For example, if Caleb’s basal rate between 6 and 7 is .45 units per hour, it will deliver 9 pulses of .05 units within those 60 minutes. .20 units will be delivered in the first 30 minutes of that hour and .25 units in the second half of that hour. The pulses are delivered in an even distribution throughout the hour.
