Humalog action duration omnipod

Hi guys
I need some help here: I was playing with my PDM and got to the settings of insulin duration, which is set on 4 hours (Homalog). I know that the peak is at ~ 2 hours after bolusing. this setup effects the "insulin on board" calcs. so- did anyone changed it to something closer to 2 hours? and if so how was your BGs as a result?
also, can I set a start temporary basal rate to start like 2 hours from now? it only allows for immediate stsrt and asks me for how long I want to stay on the temp basal
thanks......
Sharon

Hi Sharon. You don't want to set your duration for the peak time but for the full duration. "Insulin on Board" will continue to act for awhile (4 hours is a good estimate but we are all a little different) so you want to take into account all the insulin on board that continues to be acting on your blood sugar.

I can't help you with the omnipod specific question. Someone will respond, I'm sure or you can post to the Omnipod board. Our pumps all act a bit differently.

Hey Sharon! I use humalog in the pod and have my duration set at 4hrs. I too peak at about 2 hours. I wouldn't change it to 2 hours or you could start taking massively more insulin than you actually need and that is a recipe for disaster!

I am not aware that you can pre-program a temp basal for the future. You can always create a second basal program and set that one to run the "temp" function you need. However, you would need to switch back if you don't want the second program to run every day. Does that make sense? :)

we did change my sons insulin action from 4 hours to 3.5 because he eats frequently we still will sometimes add in to his bolus for some insulin on board because as you know it peaks at 1.5-2 hours if it has been 3 hours since a meal or even 2.5 and he has alot of insulin on board we will add some of that to his bolus. he is a growing teen that eats alot lately so i am not sure if he is a typical omnipoder. also i dont think you can start an extended bolus for 2 hours out jacob thought of that one when he didnt want to bolus during social situations poor boy had to bolus in the bathroom at the school dance, he is starting to be more out about things so hopefully those days are over, best of luck! amy
