Basal rate and influenza/strep throat

Hey all,

How high to most of you have to increase your temp basal rate to keep your sugars in check when you’re sick with influenza or on antibiotics?

I have influenza B and also strep throat. I’m on Tamiflu and Augmentin 1000 each 1 tab BID. Still on Combivir, which hasn’t really done anything to my BG levels. Right now to keep my BG down I have a 30% increase in my basal rate and that will pry be increased to 40% within the near future. I have only taken 1 dose of the Tamiflu and Augmentin, so they haven’t really factored into the BG increase yet. Am I heading for a 50+% increase in my basal rate? How long does it take to come down as you’re getting better and off the meds. This my first time being seriously sick since getting T1DM and obviously the first time while on the pump.

That’s are hard thing to predict since it is so variable for different people. I doubled my insulin when with the H1N1 and still many readings were in the 200’s.

Thanks. I was wondering if that would out of the ordinary to go up that much.

Not on a pump, but I use at least 50% more insulin when sick. Many find injections more reliable with stubborn illness induced highs.

I took an antibiotic that caused lows. That was a strange experience.

Hope you’re better soon.
