Basketball and the Pump

My 9 year old daughter plays basketball. She is on the minimed pump. I'm nervous about her falling down, falling on it and breaking it. I know these pumps run in the $1000's and she probably shouldn't take it off for an hour plus. I just ordered a sport pak that I hope will ease my fears of it breaking. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks.

You should check out the FRIO Insulin Cooling Case. There is one specifically for the Pump, with a belt loop. This evaporative cooler will provide a cushion - a level of protection for the Pump - and keep the insulin cool. I’ve been using a FRIO for ten years and also own the FRIO US distributorship at www.FRIOCase.com .

I played soccer and basketball with mine in high school and we had no issues with it breaking my mom just ensured my tubing was not out so others could get caught on it or it get pulled usually my sites were on my fanny and my pump was in the sports pack on my side. also my sis had problems with her sites sweating off since she sweated more then me and so my mom would just ensure she had some extra tape on it so it would stay put.

I road raced with mine. Never a problem. She can wear it inside a stretch type bra sports bra. It did not really move and it was always underneath what I wore. With extra tape it should not be an issue.

My son used to wear his pump playing basketball and soccer. He used a sports pouch or a Spi Belt to hold his pump. You can use a hard plastic credit card to place over the screen so if it does get hit, it doesn’t break or crack. We had an old gift card that was expired that we used. Your daughter will be fine and the exercise and activity is wonderful… It just makes us mothers nervous. I know. My son doesn’t wear his pump anymore to play sports although he should. We have come to a compromise now… He is 15, and started Varsity soccer. He checks before he starts and adjusts accordingly… then after 40 minutes of play, he checks again and reconnects and either gives himself a correction or at least his basal insulin rate…He goes very high when he plays sports and he needs to get the insulin in him. I would prefer he wear the insulin pump but he doesn’t like it on and I know there were kids that would pull at it when he was younger…Good luck… It is worrisome… I know !!
