Beat this!

Just spoke to a woman who works in my building who was Dx'd Type 2 about a year ago. Her A1c is down to 6.9... from a 33!

As far as I'm concerned, she wins the improvement award!

I call shenanigans. I have never seen an a1c-average glucose translation chart that lists anything higher than 14 for an a1c value, and that corresponds to an average glucose of 420 mg/dL. If you spent long enough at a sufficient level to drive up an a1c that high, you would be in serious DKA, and would certainly present (and be treated as) a type 1.

This lady is either mistaken, misinformed, or full of sh*t.

I agree… odds are good that her A1C was more like 13… numbers even into the 20’s are VERY uncommon for even a T1, nevermind a T2… that’s just not going to happen.

fYeah, my A1c at Diagnosis was 14 and I was very very sick

I’m not buying an A1c of 33 either. That’s an average BG of 897! She wouldn’t be alive to talk about it. When I was DKA my BG was 809 & my A1c was 11 something. I’m guessing hers was probably 13, not 33.

T2’s can have very high bg’s without being in DKA.Look up the words “Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state”.It has many symptoms in common with DKA but isn’t quite the same. bg’s in the 600+ range (part of the definition of the state) for months can indeed result in an A1C of 33.

T1’s, usually aren’t in DKA for months and months before diagnosis, and they can be in DKA although their bg is not as high as 600.

I was diagnosed T1 way back in 1982 before A1C’s were common. I was diagnosed without a blood test at all in fact. (Peeing on testape and having it turn jet black was good enough back then!)

My doctor friend said the highest she has seen was a 20. Are you sure it was a 33? maybe she was confused? Still the 6.9 is great whatever she started at. I bet it was 13.

I think she is bluffing. I HOPE she was bluffing. Regardless what it WAS…she now has it down to 6.9 and kuddos to her. (Unless the 6.9 was a bluff too! HA)

I can’t beat that. That is an Amazing A1c and drop, if correct.

I went through Hell to get into a Coma. My sugar was 1230(68.3). I wasn’t told an A1c, so I don’t think they even had them in that area at that time

Except for feeling exhausted(go figure after sleeping for 3 days), I didn’t feel or see any difference in my physical/mental state and I went back to work 2 days later.

Wow!..For a moment there I thought you missed a decimal point in the mid of the 3’s LOL
Im not sure if such A1C is even possible for somebody who is still…errr…alive? But I sure am glad that she is and what an improvement she did indeed! Hopefully she hasnt had any permanent complications and will further improve.

The best I can do is 13.8 at dx. last a1c (less than 2 years type 1) 5.7.
All I can say “Way to go!!!”
