Being high in a store

Have you ever been somewhere and said you were high and got the weirdest looks/reactions?
Once I was in Chick’s and said “I think I’m high” and this guy gave me this look like WHAT?! I couldn’t stop laughing xD

This is probably THE ONLY good thing about being high. Heh. So make the best of it and lemme hear your funniest stories if you’ve got any

At the beginning of the school year, my history teacher apparently “forgot” I’m diabetic (probly wasn’t paying attention when they told him). My alert dog Shyla started alerting me and he says “Is everything ok?” and without thinking, I say “I’m just a bit high.” the whole class busted out laughing because they all understood, but the teacher stood dumbfounded. “umm…I appreciate you honesty?” he says. lol!

That’s funny!
You have an alert dog?? Is that literally a dog?

yup, she’s a german shepherd/collie mix. she’s amazing

That’s cool! How does that work?

Shyla was trained to recognize and alert to the scent my body emits when my blood sugar goes high or low.
Her trainer, Ann, lets the dogs choose how they alert. If they’re trained to alert a certain way, (such as a bringsel stick) and the owner doesn’t pick up on the alert, then the dog generally won’t know what to do after that. When the dog chooses how it alerts, then that keeps the dog thinking. If their original alert doesn’t work, they’ll find another way to alert.
Shyla will sniff up and down my leg. If that doesn’t work, then she’ll start whining. If I still don’t do anything, she’ll go get my mom, dad, or brother.
I did have to switch schools after getting her, though. My old school had NO respect for animals. The kids kept trying to call Shyla away from me, barked and growled at her trying to get her to bark back, jumping at her to scare her, and even hitting her as they walked by in the hallway. The principal, vice principal, and teachers knew what was going on. And they never did a thing to stop it. One girl even said “I’m going to keep hitting your dog every day until it bites me. Then you won’t be allowed to bring her back here.” If I didn’t know that girls parents, I’d totally report her for violation of the ADA.

Man that’s cool. I didn’t know they even had such a thing!

But that’s horrible! I’m sorry that you had to switch schools because of those kids. They’re just a bunch of rude, disrespectful idiots. And no offense, if the principal and everyone didn’t even do anything, that’s not a very good school. Why would people even have such a problem with a dog?! It’s not like she was hurting them in any way.

It’s because they were bullying me to begin with. After I got Shyla, my bullies became her bullies. And they multiplied. It became the “cool thing” to pick on us.

I’m sorry. :frowning:

its ok  she just needs some re-training to help her get over her fear of people hitting her.

Today I said “Yeah, I’m a little high right now” and my friend was like “What?!?!” and I was like “No, my sugar!”. They didnt know if I was drug high or sugar high because I was kind of acting crazy today(: Lol! They know I would never be drug high!

I’m sorry to hear about your alert dog. Are there others reasons why you have an alert dog?

I have her because I dont feel my blood sugar highs or lows anymore. Not long before I got her, I checked because it was dinner time and I was 32! But I felt fine.

Wow! Thats crazy to not be able to feel a 32!!! Yeah, I’m starting to not feel my lows until 40 or 50 now. I used to be able to feel when I was 69 on the dot. I have never been able to feel when I was high. Well, sometimes I feel really lazy or a little sick, but other than that I feel normal. Tomorrow I’m going to the endo. Wish me luck(:

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy. But thats why I have my alert dog
Good luck at the endo!!

Thanks:D My A1C went up from 6.2 to 7.0. Oh well, just got to work harder for a better one next time. The next I go will be for a pre pump class, which I am super excited about! I cant wait to get a pump! I am looking at the Animas. Have you ever gone to a diabetes camp? I was wondering because I am going to one this summer.

Don’t worry, it’ll get better
Awesome!! I have the Animas Ping. I LOVE it, but just tonight it broke. The battery cap broke, so I was like “ok no big deal, I’ll just go get the spare.” So I got the spare, and then when I put it on the pump itself cracked. It’s not like I over tightened it, it just cracked. So I’ll have a new one by thursday. Until then, shots. Oh joy.
Yeah I’ve been to D camp. It’s the greatest thing ever! It’s like going to some alternate universe where diabetics are considered “normal” and then the non diabetics are considered odd. Plus you get to make friends with other diabetics and learn a lot from them. I had a great experience and I hope you do too! Unfortunately I didn’t make it back in this year… :frowning:

Oh that sucks that sucks that your pump broke. So I guess you got your new one today. I know, I HATE giving myself shots 3 times a day!

Yeah, it took a lot to get into the camp. So much paper work and stuff. OI hope I will have an awesome experience there. My cousin went to one and he went back every year. He is like 20 something now. His wife is 3 months pregnant now, so that is pretty cool. That would be so different to have so many diabetics surrounding you, to where that is considered normal, and the other people who arent diabetic are not normal. It would be like a break from being ‘different’. How old are you now? I’m 14. Just turned 14 on April 10.

Awwwwwe that’s so sad. I’m sorry.

OMG! Brandi! I was at camp a couple of weeks ago and one of the campers had an alert dog! It made me think of you. His dog was sooo cute and her name was Emma. I guess some dogs are life savers
