Alert Dog Saves Kid From Faulty Meter!

During this past week, my Diabetic Alert Dog, Shyla helped me realize that my blood sugar meter was having a malfunction.

Last Thursday, during second period at school, Shyla alerted. Yet when I checked my blood sugar, it was in the 90s. I figured she was alerting to what hadn’t happened yet, so I waited and when she alerted again, I checked again. Same thing. This went on the entire period. During Third period, she still alerted. So I thought “Ok, this dog has NEVER been wrong. If Shyla’s not the problem, then what else is there?” Then it occurred to me: the meter. I looked at the test strip bottle and saw that the control solution should read no higher than 137. I checked the meter with the solution and it came up as 179! I excused myself to the nurse’s office (another student in tow) and grabbed my back up meter. Sure enough, I was low.

If it was not for Shyla, I would have never known about the meter malfunction and would still be using the darn thing. And if it was not for Ann, Oscar, and Jeri, I would have never been able to get Shyla. They are now considered my family, and I don’t care what rumors about them fly around. Rumors are false. Rumors are a mere attempt at hurting someone. Rumors need to be stopped.

I know that last bit was off-topic, but it is true and needed to be said.

I’m glad you have your dog and you are doing so well with her. Kudos to Shyla!
