BG Rises when i wake

Hi people
Here is the question i have been doing a few test to see what happens with my ratios and all. BAck when i was first dxd i was 20. I use to have a dawn phenomenon. My bg would star to rise at 4 am until a waked up. What i didback then was to uped my night basal (lantus) to combat it. Now my bg stayes pretty flat at night sometimes even drops (2 or 3 mmol) in the night. I was having trouble with my breakfest I:C ratio so what i did was that i skiped breakfest ( i did a few times to confirm) and this is what happenes. My bg startes to rise about 30 minutes after i wake up and usally will rise by (5 mmol) on its own. How can i conter this effect. ANyone else have this problem

But isint dawn phenomenon during the night. What i was thinking of doing is since it rise by about 5 mmol would take breakfest bolus + 2 units to see what happens what do you think

I must eat and bolus as soon as I get up. Like DP I have a second phase BG spike when I get out of bead. If I skip breakfast it can take almost as much insulin to correct my BG over the next 4 or 5 hour's. My I:C in the morning is almost double what my evening I:C is. Increasing my early morning basal is not a option because I will go low if I don't get up at a scheduled time and I almost never get up at the same time each day, it can very from 4am to 7.30am. It's hard to cover my hormonal spike...the only thing consistent about it is it happens almost every day. I wear a CGM and it starts predicting a High BG soon after I get up, this makes it possible for me to start correcting early so it's not out of my my target range for very long.

Yes, but your body's pretty smart. When you make a move, it'll counter-move. Thrust, parry, and all that :-)

What I'm getting at here is that you need fuel when you wake up. When you started skipping breakfast, a new homeostatis was gradually established where you did not have external calories provided, so your liver adjusted to dumping sugar in your bloodstream.

Simply eating breakfast again won't kill the phenomena immediately, but re-establishing that pattern will turn off the liver sugar spigot gradually. Probably within a week to a few.

Thanks Dave, il try that give my normal I:C ratio and eat right away. Or maybe + 1 unit. I’ll test it out tomorrow will let you know what will happen.

So what you wake up bolus from bed and go down and eat breakfast. Does it have to be a high carb for it to work

Geremie, I also had dawn phenomenon when first Dx'd. It was controlled while I was on metformni, but when I switched to insulin, I had this problem again. I take Levemir and increasing the night dose helped, but not consistentlly. I also se a rise in my BG startin around 30 minutes after I wake, if I don't take a bolus because I plan to skip breakfast.

What has helped alleviate DP for me is that I have a late-night snack that includes a few (8-10g) carbs. With that, I do not see any overnight rise. I still struggle a bit with I:C ratios for breakfast, so I just take a larger bolus and eat something - often something light in carbs (like a greek yogurt).

(note: I am MDI, not on a pump and split my Levemir dose to get better afetrnoon/evening coverage.)

I eat a low carb breakfast, a common meal would include coffee, two eggs, some chicken sausage, about 1oz of cheese or Greek Yogurt. I also always bolus for protein at 50% of my I:C. I eat about 120 carbs a day just not many carbs before lunch.
