Birth Control and Type 1... Miracle

So, came off nuvaring birth control about 2 months ago… after almost 2 years on it.

INSTANTLY… my bloodsugars, infamous for being in the 350 (12.1 A1C range) have come down, and stayed down. I have my bad moments of course… but my 30 day bloodsugar average is about 230 now. i couldn’t believe my eyes. i wasn’t doing anything differently and the numbers are coming down… the birth control was the only factor that changed.

TO CLARIFY *** I AM NOT TRYING TO GET PREGNANT AT ALL... EVER IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. I WENT OFF BIRTH CONTROL BECAUSE IT CAN BE HARMFUL AND IT HAS HELPED MY BLOODSUGARS. I WAS ASKING IF ANYONE ELSE HAS EXPERIENCED THIS.

Wow, you know I have questions about Nuvaring, was actually thinking of going off it, have been on for a year. I shall have to try that and see what happens. It’s really hard to find any information about its effect on blood sugar. I’ll keep you posted.

Good luck with the pregnancy. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you (although babies/children may end up raising your bg again… lol)!

oh dear god no, lol, i don’t want any babies now, or probably ever with my health history. but thank you!

You need to have your HgA1c less than 5 for several months BEFORE becoming pregnant to avoid complications to the child. Get a good doctors help before becoming pregnant.

i DON’T want to get pregnant!!! at all. ever. i went off birth control to help avoid complications of birth control.

Ok, got you. Have you heard of anything else regarding hormonal birth control and its effect on blood sugar? Just curious. There is a woman’s group on this site, I guess I should do a search to see if anyone’s had any experience regarding this… If I find anything I’ll let you know.

My OBGYN put me on nuvaring, because it is supposed to have less effect on blood sugars compared to other birth controls out there.

I just went off my BC, the pill, and it has had a dramatic effect on my sugars. My periods are terrible (the reason I was on the pill in the first place) but I think I’ll take the horrible pain once a month in exchange for (hopefully) keeping my organs and appendages later in life.

Less than 5 is not what most doctors say. Most will say around 6. Less than 5 can be very dangerous for some insulin-dependent diabetics to try to attain, because of the risk of severe hypoglycemic events. However, once pregnant, a value in the high 5’s is recommended.

I do Depo with no effect on my blood sugars.

i just got off the nuva ring times 5 days and swithched to the pill.My BSs skyrocketed to the 400s.They said it had to do with hormones.

Hormones can definitely have a major effect on blood sugars. There’s a non-hormonal IUD, which might be a good alternative for those that want some sort of birth control without the hormones.

YES I’m so glad someone else brought this up. I went off birth control over a year ago and within a couple of months of being off it my insulin needs decreased by half. I’m also able to control my sugars better than I have since I went on the pill in '06.

My sugars also went out of control when I went on and off of bith control. The hormones are what made my sugars go out of wack as insulin is also a horomone. I found that only certain types of birth control pills caused this problem for me. The lower estrogen ones worked better for me.

Okay, I know she does not want to get pregant, but it is not an A1C of 5, but of 6.

I have noted more problems in the days just before my period now that I did when I took BC, but otherwise I have not noted BS differences.

BTW, I did have a 40 point drop in cholesterol when I went off BC.
