Hey fellow Bete’s. I thought that I would spread this news to everyone here on the site…A recent UK study by Kings College in London suggests drinking black tea after eating can reduce the glycaemic index of the meal. The researchers found that blood suger levels of the people who drank 340ml’s of hot tea after eating a meal high in carbohydrates fell 40 PER CENT more in two hours than the sugar levels of those who didn’t drink tea.
It is thought an active compound in the tea triggers a greater secretion of insulin, thereby promting the reduction in sugar levels. This could be an important finding for people with diet-modifiable diabetes…Source: Journal of the American College of Nutrition…
I have tried this myself, and it actually works. I ate my meal, as usual, with 10 units of rapid at 2:35 in the afternoon. My Bloodsugar reading was 7.2 at the time. At 6pm I started on my pot of tea, Earl Gray (around 700ml’s) After I finished the pot, around 6:50pm, I started to feel kind of low, so I did a finger poke and my reading was 4.6. As you may know, with Nova Rapid, the dose normally last for around 3 hours after your shot, then your sugar should stabilize. Well, 20 minutes later at 7:10 pm, I felt a hypo coming on, so I did another finger poke and my reading was 3.8…This was almost 5 hours after my Nova Rapid shot. So for me the black tea brought my bloodsugar level crashing down even though I am type 1.
I recommend that you all should give this a try after your meals. Give yourself a finger test after your meal, drink at least 350ml’s of tea, then finger test again. You will be amazed. This means no more topping up with insulin if your sugar is too high after heavy meals. Post your results after you try! Could save you heaps in insulin cost.
Regards,
Garrett
