Brand-new member, but not sure which category I fit into :)

Hi Franzi,

Your results sound like mine were a year after my DX, before my sugar went sky high and I went on insulin. I had a low C peptide and low normal insulin. Only had insulin antibodies (negative result) done at that time, not the GAD. When finally tested, my GAD was 3x the norm.

Saw new endo last week and I LOVE her. They actually downloaded my PDM and doc analyzed the results and gave recommendations for IC ratio changes! Can you believe it? She asked what did the other doc and I talk about at our appts if we didn’t go over this kind of stuff!

Unfortunately, the state sponsored insurance my wife and I are getting on probably won’t cover the pod but I found a place online where I can get them for a really good price.

Franzi,

Fear not, you may yet go back to eating nearly 60 grams of carbs at meals one day if you ever have to go on insulin. I “never” thought I would be eating 150 carbs a day ever again in my life but with the magic of insulin, it is possible. Yes, you’ll probably have to do like I did and reduce your carbs to tolerance. One thing to keep in mind, based on everything that I’ve read is that going on insulin sooner vs later helps preserve as much pancreatic function as possible. I, too, thought I was eating so healthy, but my body didn’t seem to think so either!!!

Keep us updated.

Thanks! I’m actually kind of liking 30-40 grams right now – we’ll see how I do with less!

That’s awesome that you found a great new endo who is tech savvy and listens to you! I’m so glad to hear that  Bummer about the insurance, but it’s nice that you got a good deal online.

Thanks for the phrase “reduce carbs to tolerance”. Those are the magic words. Even with insulin, I have a limited carb tolerance. I suppose if I timed it just right and took enough insulin, I could eat more carbs, but it seems to me worthwhile to take as little insulin as I can get away with. I’m not terribly active, and I just don’t need all that glucose and insulin in my system. I was never obese, but even being at a normal BMI, I do have a tum, and if I ate all those carbs, I WOULD gain weight, and it’s just not worth it!

Hi -

I’m not disagreeing with your current approach but I want to second David’s thought that if you find that you can’t manage on your lower carb diet, it may be healthier to go on insulin rather than cutting your carbs lower and lower until you crash.

Of course if you keep your A1c around 6 or below, the chances of finding an endo who will prescribe insulin are pretty slim. Good luck - we all need it - even or perhaps especially when we feel most confident.

Maurie

That’s for sure (your last comment, I mean)! I will try your suggestions, BadMoon. Thank you
