Has anyone attended Camp Nejeda ?? I am going to family camp in Aug looking forward to it but wonder how it was ?
Camp Nejeda is absolutely awesome. While I have never attended family camp, our 13-year-old son is there right now for his fourth straight year of regular camp. He ADORES Nejeda. Everything is geared towards the campers fun and safety. The medical care is outstanding, and the experienceitself is the epitome of “summer camp.” Michael comes home charged, happy, and always a bit more mature. It is a place where bg checks, lows, highs, pumps, shots, carb counting, peeing on a ketone stick, etc. are perfectly normal. The non-D kids that may be there (nurse’s children, siblings of campers with diabetes) are the ones who are “different”.
Enjoy your time there. You and your child will have a blast!
Thanks so much. We are doing the family camp first then will see about sending my son and daughter. They both are diabetics . Thanks so much for the reply
You are welcome. If you want any other first-hand-parent-information, let me know. How old are your kids?
Today, my son is going on the white water rafting trip (they offer a couple of optional trips on the longer sessions). Phil Southerland, founder of Team Type 1, and Ken Kotch, who is doing an ebook on people with diabetes (he is T1) , are both going on the trip. Very cool :)!
WAY KEWL… my son is 7 and daughter is 12… of course any advice is welcomed … I have never been camping before neither has anyone in my family so this is all very new to us… Like wondering how the feed us since the food is included is it only certain times you can eat and what about snacks and drinks ? DO I need to bring extra? Have you been to the family camp ? ANY INFO YOU HAVE send my way Thanks a bunch
We never did family camp. I went camping once, years ago, and let’s just say I am NOT a nature girl! I am not sure about how the food works at family camp. I know at summer camp there are scheduled meal and snack times, but they also always have snacks (and tabs!) available for lows. All carb counts are posted. I would probably bring some stuff your kids like that you can keep in the cabin. I know that despite it being summer and the cabins having no AC, it usually gets pretty chilly at night. My son takes long pants for sleep-he also took an extra blanket, but I am thinking that this week he has needed neither pants nor blankets. Take bug spray-there are usually gnats in the AM, and probably at dusk. Michael said he also sprayed around his bed at night, too. The cabins have a bathroom, but the showers are in separate buildings for boys and girls. There is a pool. Flip flops are good for the showers and for going to and from the pool. These are the bits and pieces that come to mind. If you think of something more specific that you want to know, I’ll dig around in my brain for info :).
The staff is the BEST. Flip (Phil De Rea) is the director. Uncle Jim is the head of the counselors (I am not sure of hit exact title). Ray (he’s a guy) is the head nurse.
I got a letter from Michael today (and cried a bit-boy, do I miss him!). He is having a terrific time…it makes me feel so good that he is there, in good hands, and having fun. We pick him up on Friday. It’s funny-every time we pick him up he looks a little more mature.
i went there when i was 13 or 14 i dont remember a whole bunch about it just that i didnt want to leave my parents but after that i actually really enjoyed it… i wouldnt have traded the experience for the world!!
Me too! I went there for just 1 year. I was a counselor in training that year. I must have been about 14? It was definitely fun and I’ll never forget it!
I was looking to offer a potential program there for an hour assembly maybe more if they like my presentation next year (possibly) but lost all my contact information.
What kinds of activities do they offer in a typical day? I was a Camp Firefly (PA) camper a long time ago. Curious what the standard activites at Nejeda to be? Arts and Crafts, Swimming, I take for granted Archery (I’ll assume). Education in all kinds of ways both above and below the procerbial radar…
What else do they typically offer in normal day?
