Change in exercise equals bg madness

hello, am on holiday for a month with my mom at her south Carolina home. I signed up for the month at her gym and instead of walking my dog in the park in the mornings for about an hour, sometimes more, im doing zumba classes and running.

when im home I have about 25 carbs for breakfast with some protein and fat before I leave the house and at two hours post, I am back in range (under 140). now I am eating salad with chicken and a handful of almonds and coffee before exercise-thinking if I do something more strenuous, ill raise my bg. I am correct and am now at 180 or 200 after this exercise.

I don't want to take fast acting before going to the gym because I am about 1:25 and to exercise ill have to eat loads of carbs-im thinkin like 50-before working out.

I don't want to work out in the afternoon because that breaks up the day and we have beaches to swim at!

I am thinking an extra unit of levemir at night (taken at 8.30) could be given later and that would maybe see me thru the 9am workout??

any other ideas? should I eat MORE carbs, like I normally do at home? it sounds counter intuitive but many things do with D....

and now two hours later my bg is back to normal at like 100. so I guess the rise in bg is kind of unavoidable if I want to do this am exercise? diabetes is so STUPID!

Well everyone is different. In my case, things like weightlifting will raise my bloodsugar, while walking will drop it. It is worse in the morning. I found that I actually had to bolus for lifting. Often I will drop an hour or two after workouts so I try to eat afterwards.

I would try:

1) exercising before breakfast
2) bolus and more cho (like you said) before exercise
3) bolusing more if the exercise requires it (as Brian said). Just keep it low cause insulin is gonna kick in pretty strong.

Don't be too hard with yourself, it's trial and error as always! Just make a few more BG tests and see how you react to exercise. I personally would try to isolate variable and see if it's about the breakfast, the exercise or both.

One of the hardest things about D-management is that I have an inclination to continue doing what I've been doing. Reacting to the changed BG pattern is smart. It sounds like the changes already suggested will just be minor tweaks and you'll be going sideways again. Good luck.

Do Spain and South Carolina have anything in common?

omg! terry, I cant get a decent glass of wine here!

My main exercise is walking, I don't do anything too strenuous except maybe the gardening and housework but at times they all drop me low or just lower me. Sometimes however they raise me.. usually this is when I'm high already and my body has decided it will stay high for a while for whatever reason. I usually don't eat before these types of exercise, at most some nuts or a small protein snack. If I go hypo during or after then I add carbs/glucose. Each day is different for me, I never know what will happen.

yeah, its the different every day thing that gets me.

I know.. it makes it very difficult to get it "right".. I guess the only thing we can do is just react as best as we can to whatever is happening at the time. There is definitely no formula for stability as type1 D... even on 30g per day I still had fluctuations etc. I think it's just a fact of life for us.

Although some people do seem to stay more stable, so maybe it is just that way for some of us and we will never know why...

South Carolina (SC) is really strange when it comes to alcohol. Some years ago, they only allowed liquor to be served from mini bottles like they do on airplanes. They used to do that with wine at many places. I think the remnants of prohibition are still very evident in SC. That being said, you should be able purchase good wines at beer and wine stores, but restaurants are often weird.

it IS really weird down here with the wine situation. i think people down here are more beer/spirits people. spain has spoiled me.
