Checking for ketones?

When did your doctors start having you check for ketones every morning? I am only 7 weeks. I saw my endo a week ago, and he said they would have me start doing that later. But I saw my CDE nurse practitioner today (she works for the endo), and she wants me starting daily tests now. What were your experiences?

Also, does anyone know what exactly the deal is with ketones? The CDE basically said that one can develop ketones in pregnancy if one isn’t eating enough carbs – your body goes into starvation mode overnight. But then what does it have to do with diabetes? Shouldn’t all pregnant women be testing? Or is the assumption that we eat fewer carbs? I told her that I wasn’t likely to be in any danger, what with the nightly bowl of ice cream and all.

Hi there, congrats. I’m 17 weeks pregnant with my third. I’ve never tested for ketones - just protein. The ice cream sounds delicious

I was never told to test for ketones. They tested at my monthly lab work. My endo would not let me reduce carbs at all though because she told me that would cause ketones. So I was eating 180g per day.

I started testing immediately after I found out I was pregnant, per my doctor’s request. And sure enough, I had ketones - I was surprised because my fasting numbers were great and I was eating a bedtime snack. My doctors think I wasn’t getting enough carbs during the day, although I think I was eating plenty. I was having slightly elevated numbers throughout the day at first, so I think that might have been a factor. But my doctors never seemed overly concerned about the ketones, and they did go away after the first month or two (it’s all a blur now so I can’t exactly recall!).

Was it mild ketones or medium? Did you ever test for ketones when you weren’t pregnant? I have mild ketones every morning that I test (whether I am pregnant or not). It doesn’t show up on lab work, but it does show up on the ketone strip.

I had mild and medium, depending on the morning. I’ve tested for ketones since my pregnancy and haven’t had any. I can’t remember now if I was testing before or not (isn’t that awful…). I think I did test a few times and never had any, but I’m not 100% sure.

50-60 g a day? It sounds not much at all! Would you mind sharing what your daily meals are? I just can hardly imagine 50-60 grams of carbs per day… Thx.
