I see you are a T2. You are on oral meds? They may have you skip your meds for the 24 hours before your test, depending on what they are. You may be OK with your sugars not going down - you may likely go up, especially if they have you holding your meds. If you are worried about lows, have some gatorade handy (they will tell you not red or orange) or regular Sprite, gingerale, etc. Sugar free jello. Chicken broth (no noodles or solids). Have some diet Sprite or 7 up available. Make sure they know you are on oral meds - and ask them specifically what to do with your meds before the procedure and during the prep. The preps are frequently sugar free - make sure yours is before you take it from the pharmacy.
What Jennifer said.
I never thought to check on the meds. If i remember right they tasted pretty bad. Those are some good suggestions.
thanks
Do what I done last year. I held my nose and drank it! LOL!!!
Oh and pick out a flavor you like b/c if you pick out a flavor you don’t like you won’t drink it. I hate orage ANYTHING and LOVE berry! I picked out berry, mixed it up then drank it, and decided for 3 months I didn’t like berry anymore! But atleast I drank it then! LOL!
Good Luck! Those are never fun! I have two colonscopies and a sigmoidscopy but this was 5 years ago. I am due for another one as routinue every 5 years but have no insurance to get it done right now. But I wondering how I was going to do with D now. I forgot about those icky meds to clean out your colon. Sounds like they are carb free at least.
Jennifer has given good advice. In addition, I’d call the office and voice your concerns to them. Also have them instruct you on what should be your total prep for the procedure. I haven’t had the procedure since being diagnosed. But prior to now. I took necessary heart meds with a sip of water.
Just make sure they and you don’t get any surprises the morning of the procedure. Communication is key here.
HI Bruce- I have had 2 colonoscopys since being Dx’ed with D. I am a type 1and was told to cut my night insulin dose in half. If you take an oral med you probably could take it the nite before, but ask your doc, either your endo or the GI ( they do have experience with diabetics.) You aren’t under anesthesia a very long time for the procedure, but bring something to eat for after it is over. Perhaps a juice box and apple sauce. The day of prep (a yucky day) take less of your meds. Also bring your meter for afterwards to check your sugar ( they probably don’t have them there) Good luck you will be fine.
thanks foe all the info. it helps to bounce the ideas off others. The saving grace last time was baby wipes:)
Also ask about your IV – I forgot the first time and they hooked me up to D5 instead of Ringers Lactate. I assumed my orders would reflect I’m diabetic – they missed the IV. I only had a 1/2 dose of my insulin that morning and I was high all afternoon. The second time I remembered and they had no problem with hanging Ringers Lactate and thus I had no problem later.
All the other advise is right on the money. Check your med orders and enjoy the drink – Good Luck.
Too late for this now, but I’ve been told there are also pills instead of the yucky drink.
Had my first one a couple of weeks ago. I was told not to take my metformin the morning of the procedure. However, you can’t eat anything but clear liquids for about 24 hours prior so WHAT CARBS do I need the metformin for? For me clear liquids was chicken broth and some lemon sugar free jello that I had to make because the only premade flavors that I could find were red or green.
I took matters into my own hands and the day before the procedure I took my am metformin then skipped the pm and skipped the am of the procedure. I am a T2 (like you) and the morning of my procedure my blood sugar was lower than I have ever experienced it and informed the nurses as soon as I arrived. They hooked me up to an IV (just saline…they could have quickly added glucose to the IV if it was necessary) and my bs quickly improved with just the saline. It seems I was dehydrated since I couldn’t have anything to drink from midnight and my procedure wasn’t until 11.
Good Luck!
my doc said nothing red or purple / may interfere w/dye
at least when i mentioned i was diabetic they sckeduled it for 8 am. lots of good advice thanks
