well don’t need need to the doctor next week. the on call doctor had a look at my labs and called me as for what I was going in for the wait would have been longer then seeing the doctor so they waved rule about not tell me over the phone answers. doctor I spoke to today said yes I have type 2 . no I don’t have a family doctor right at the moment. a1c is 5.5% that combin with the blood work done at the hospital on Tuesday afternoon 6.8mmol/L and fasting Wednesday morning 6.3mmol/l as well as the family history and other symptoms. all are factor in to the diagnosis. even though they they are not extremely high numbers. because of the family history and other symptoms of diabetes. is why they diagnosis me as such. the doctor said to me. diabetes diagnosis is not based on a double digit reading any more anything above a 6.0mmol/l fasting can be diagnosed as diabetes if there are other symptoms, risk factors showing and a1c above 5.0%. is what I was told by the doctor. the asked about my eating habits. I told them and gave them the last couple days worth of meals as an example of what I eat. the doctor said my eating habits are ok and don’t warrant needing to see a diabetes educator at this point in time. but do to cut backs I can’t get test strips covered but i have found affordable ones at best buy. plus my mom work at best buy so even more savings. sorry I don’t know how to convert between mmol/l and mg/dl
A1C of 5.5% could be considered prediabetes if you get multiple test done over a period of time. At this stage you could try exercising and diet change and nothing may ever come of it again or for a long time. Test your blood sugar and keep a log of everything for a few months. If things don’t improve your doctor may put you on Metformin which works great and is very cheap to take.
Getting things under control(diet and exercise) before you start to build up high insulin resistance and damage your pancreas is very important, at that stage you may have less options.
Sounds like the doctors are on top of things. If the doctor is correct, they have caught it very early. Prediabetes as it is sometimes called is merely very early stage T2. It is a point in T2 progression where there is the best chance of stopping it before it becomes full blown T2. @Jeff_G1 has given some good advice. Diet, especially a low carbohydrate diet, along with exercise is the best way to go.
put on metformin when I got discharged form the hospital this past Wednesday.
All I can say is you need lifestyle revamp from diet to exercise, Hope things will change positively for you.
Well done on catching it so early, that is a good start. Obviously sorry that you have ever received this diagnosis but at least you know what you are dealing with and can start to learn ways to manage the condition. That is a bummer that your test strips are not covered, but great that you’ve found a means to access them anyway. Best of luck and you can certainly get plenty of helpful information from this forum. I have diabetes 30 years and I have learned a lot from this site since joining a couple of months ago, lol, I used to think I already knew everything about diabetes but I was definitely wrong on that score!
You either multiply or divide by 18. So a mmol/l of 10 is 180 in mg/dl
((hugs))
I think diabetes education is very useful as this disease causes many issues. It is usually covered by insurance. Nancy
