Day and night time basals - different?

Hi everyonee,

just a question on basal insulin. I use Humalin-N as my basal.

Is it usual to need different amounts day and night-time?

Please share.

I take the morning shot around 7 am and usually take aboug 15 units (this may be overkill even as I find that I slowly drift low - particularly in the morning - if i don't eat). I take my evening shot before I sleep, usually about 10 pm (last meal was usually around 7 pm) and it is now up to 25 units. I generally go to bed with blood sugars somewhere from 80 - 100, and I don't seem to go low overnight (only tested a few times), and am fasting BS is in the low 80s. Am I strange? Have to see my endo next week and I'm sure he's going to comment on this!

I don't know anything about Humalin-N, Sally, but in general, Yes, our basal needs are different at different times a day! That is why most of us who are on a pump have multiple different rates for different times. I have 9 different "time zones" and those rates range from .325 to .500 per hour. It just stands to reason that the same would be true when you take long-acting insulin in two doses! If your endo has issues with this I would just show him your records of good numbers to say, "whatever works, works!" (I doubt he will find it odd that there are two different rates (especially if he already knew you were splitting the dose)

Sounds like he is more in tune with what some book says, than what he sees in front of him, but then I think that's what the rigors of medical school does to doctors! I would just keep sharing your excellent results with him. Is there a saying in Tagalog like "the proof is in the pudding"?
