When I first started on the pod in April of this year, I used anywhere from 38-40 units of Novolog per day. This continued throughout the summer, but now it has decreased. I’ve only been using 28-30 units per day, and still have good levels. I had to lower my hourly dose because I was going low more often. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas as to why?
Yes, I have. I used to use around 30 units a day and now I’m down to less than 20! Have you changed your diet at all, or do you exercise more than you did? Have you lost any weight? I know all of those can very much affect how much insulin you require …
Anyhow, the less insulin you need, the better- so keep doing whatever you’re doing!
This may sound weird but every spring and every fall there’s a change in my insulin requirements. It’s weird. Happend again about a month ago. Watch for it and pay attention to the timing. There’s nothing that changes as far as activity or food for me. The Doctor seems to think it’s activity change (more in summer) but that’s not the case, in fact it decreases in the fall, not increases.
That’s good news. You’re probably managing your D a lot better now. Change in exercising habits, dieting and weight loss could be the reasons.
I was told by my endo that people typically use less insulin on the pump after a couple months of adjustment. Something about needing less b/c it’s all fast acting as opposed to both long acting and fast acting. Not sure of the details. I experienced the same thing myself.
Ok Thanks everyone! Weight loss is definitely not the problem… I’m still trying to gain back about 10 of the pounds I lost before diagnosis. I am tall and slender, so I want my weight back! I haven’t been eating any differently either, but I was wondering about the weather/change in seasons… When I went to a city with a cooler climate this summer for a week, I had to lower my insulin, but as soon as I got back home, it went back up. This is my first fall and winter since diagnosis and Omnipod, so I guess we’ll see how it goes. My endo did mention the body adjusting to the pump as a possibility, so I guess time will tell!
