Dexcom G5 Review - Now Supports Apple Watch!

Nice. I supposed they’ve worked out coordinating any data that duplicates if you then connect the Dex receiver.

I assume so yes, although I haven’t tried it since I have not used a receiver since getting the G5.

Terry - here is a pic of the high glucose (same for a low) alert on the AW. You get haptic feedback as well for it (I know you said you were interested in this).

My G5 is on order, I’m excited to use it. I did however read that there is no only vibrate mode setting, wth? Can someone confirm this for me. I try to be as discreet as possible with my T1 diabetes. I’m not looking forward to bells, whistles and honking sounds going off during meetings. Thank you so much!

Hi Danny - you are correct. There is no vibrate when your phone is set to silent, at least I haven’t figured out a way to do it yet. You do get taps from the Apple Watch when receiving push notifications from the G5 App though.

That is correct the app does not have its own vibrate setting. However, on the iPhone you can switch the whole phone to vibrate mode with the switch on the side. Or you can use the Do Not Disturb setting as well.

Also, if you own the watch, when an alert goes off it only alerts on the watch, not the phone. So you don’t get a double alarm. But this is a function of the phone/watch not the G5 app.

Thanks, Mike. I was disappointed that the first iteration of the watch did not exploit the haptic capability and thought it was held up by an FDA issue. Glad to read that that’s not the case.

Dexcom seems to be better anticipating our needs as all this tech unfolds. I think in the past, the diabetic voice was either not at the table to make decsions or was consitently over-ruled by engineering and regulatory concers.

That is great to hear that they calibrate simultaneously. I would use the CGM function more on the Vibe if I didn’t have to maintain it separately from the receiver. I suspect that I will end up using the receiver a lot more than my phone, but it is nice to know that it is easy to go back and forth.

Dexcom just told me over the phone that they cannot ship the G5 transmitter until late November! They cite demand as the reason.

I was disappointed with their customer service as it took 45 minutes on hold to confirm my order.

Yep… several FB groups have been rumbling with that news the past few days. Very disappointing for users.

Whoa, thanks for letting us know. Looks like I better call tomorrow to get my order started. I think I got G4 with Share recently enough that my upgrade to G5 is free, but if I want it as a Christmas gift to myself I better hurry up and order!

I had to remind myself that I have a very good working CGM with my G4/Share system and Apple Watch. What irritates me is that when I called on Friday to order the G5, the customer service person told me all they needed to do was verify my insurance coverage and they could ship today, Tuesday.

All I expect is the truth, not a 45-minute run-around on hold to get a two minute answer. At one point the rep told me he couldn’t book my order since I have an insulin pump. WTF? I told him I don’t have a VIbe, it’s a Ping. Then I told him, change that, I don’t have any insulin pump! Just book the fricking order. Send me an email confirmation with the expected late November delivery date and don’t make me call you if that date slips!

@anon85331563 & @mikep Thank you both so much for the input.

For those who are expecting to get a free upgrade to the G5 based on a recent purchase of a G4 Share, I was told that I was only able to upgrade within 30 days of the shipment of my G4 because I had used a distributor (Edgepark). Dexcom’s website indicates that you have 60 days from the date that the G5 started shipping.

So if you use a distributor, call Dexcom to find out your upgrade deadline rather than assuming that you have a couple of months to make your decision.

Does this also mean that you can upload all the data from the receiver to Dexcom Studio (even if you haven’t been in range of the receiver all day)?

I know it all goes to Clarity anyway, but I’m wondering if I could continue to use Dexcom Studio with the G5. (I really rely on the overlay of multiple days without averaging and they don’t seem to have included that in Clarity.)

Damn–if that’s true I’m SOL. My distributor told me they couldn’t do the upgrade insurance-wise until my current transmitter was up for renewal, which is 6 months after getting my G4 (today, as it happens). But I got my G4 in April–30 days from then would have been before the G5 was even released. And when I called Dexcom back in August they said I was eligible. Hm. There does seem to be a bit of confusion in this whole situation. Guess I’ll find out…

G4 updates to clarity.

Man that stinks Terry. I’m sorry to hear that.

Thanks, Mike. I wasn’t so much irritated by the delay as I was with the lengthy hold time and confusion. Like I said earlier, I am fortunate to have continued access to all this D-tech. I can certainly get by without the latest and greatest for a few months!

As far as I am concerned, G5 is not such a huge improvement. We are yet to see how often the bluetooth link drops, and how long the new transmitters last (3 months?). So, I’ve decided to just wait through my insurance cycle, and get the G5 in about 6 months or so, which should also be enough for Dexcom to sort through any order glitches and software debugging.
