Dexcom G5 user trying to use Android/Android Wear

Hi everybody,

I’ve been around on tudiabetes as a “reading-only visitor” since Summer '15, when I was diagnosed with T1 Diabetes at the age of 24.
First of all, I’d like to thank you for all the helpful information and experiences I was able to gather from your posts!
And now I think it’s time for me to start helping and sharing as well

Since I’m writing you all from Austria (Europe), I can provide you with some recent developments regarding the Dexcom G5 system (which I’m – thanks to you – currently using on iOS). Two weeks ago the distributor for Dexcom in central Europe (‘Nintamed’) announced, that after being integrated into the Dexcom Inc. company last year, their German subsidiary from now on will trade under the name of ‘Dexcom Deutschland GmbH’. This change also meant going online with a new website. ‘Dexcom.de’ is under construction, so they are still using their former URL ‘nintamed.eu’

So I paid a visit to their site and their it was: The Dexcom G5 System for Android!
Without any announcements (not even in a short email to existing customers) they introduced this long-awaited Version of the G5 to the European market. Because I tried to avoid having to translate the whole website from German into English for you, I took a look at Dexcom UK et voilà: http://www.dexcom.com/en-GB Also available in the UK.

Regarding compatibility you can find a list of all the compatible devices here (choose international, not US): ‘http://www.dexcom.com/compatibility

One very cool feature, which I could only find mentioned on nintamed.eu, is the G5 Transmitter 1.2, which can now store the glucose reading for up to 3 hours. (Called ‘Glucose Data Backfill’). But I was told by my sales rep that this feature is only available for the Android system (not iOS) for now. Maybe as a little goodie for the long wait! But it will soon be available for iOS as well, I’m sure. For more information on the transmitter 1.2 you could use Google translate and got to https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintamed.eu%2Fp%2Fproducts%2Fdexcomg5%2FreceiverMobilAndroid&edit-text=

I know, all this news only affects part of the European market for now, but I think that it’s only a matter of time before the G5 Android will come onto the US market as well. (Obviously, Dexcom has two different strategies for the US and the international market – Fun fact: We are still waiting for the both loved and hated G5 iOS Update which overwrites the DND-setting. And we do not have the Apple Watch compatibility yet )

But I just do not want to withheld this big news from you!
If you have any questions regarding the Dexcom News, health system in Austria, living with T1D here or anything else, feel free to ask

All the best,
David
