The upcoming release of the LTE enabled smartwatch has got me thinking. Has anybody heard anything about a NO PHONE integration with Dexcom? Seems to me like this would be a perfect solution for parents that keep tabs via the cloud (especially for tiny children not quite big enough to carry/need a phone). I see all the parts there–just wondering if there were developers already planning on this new cellular connection.
Already done through the open source app xdrip+. Latest builds support direct collection via Android Wear smartwatches from G5 transmitters.
But does it then upload to dexcom server or nightscout? That is the real question.
Yes, uploads to the nightscout servers, Dexcoms servers, and some other cloud-based stuff. I don’t use those features, so I’m not very familiar with them.
It should be noted that the Wear collector does’t upload directly at this point, but must sync with the phone first. The Wear standalone feature is really new, so all it does right now is collect and display readings, then sync with the data on the phone when in contact again.
The phone app has all the functionality to work with the cloud.
Awesome, hopefully someone can implement that functionality to the watch itself–so that no phone is required.
Need an watch with cellular capability first!
However, if I get the thrust of your interest, this is for tracking small kids for which its not very practical to have a smartphone on them at all times.
The main author of xdrip+ has also developed a DIY solution for that, called Parakeet, a small piece of hardware about the size of a pair of AAA batteries, that is dirt simple to build. Combines a microcontroller and cell module into a very small footprint that can easily be “attached” to a kid some way. This provides exactly what a parent of a young PWD is looking for – uploads to Nightscout, provides real-time monitoring.
Here’s the link to jamorham’s diabetes project page. To a non-engineer, this stuff may look complicated – it’s really not. If anyone decides to give any of this a shot, see if you can find a friend in the area that has some DIY engineering background to help (we’re everywhere), or, if you have ANY soldering skills AT ALL, dive right in and give it a shot. This is a really, really, easy one.
Wow, thanks for the info! I am happy to report that the new Google smartwatch WILL be released with cellular capability (actually one with and one without). I will definitely look into Parakeet.

[/quote]Yeah, I’m very excited about it. I’ve been wearing a Gear S2 3G (Verizon) since April and absolutely love the call/data capability. Too bad it’s based on Tizen instead of Android Wear.
I display G5 BG data from xdrip+ using Wearable Widgets, which is supported on the S2.
