Diabetes Birthday and other Great Diabetes Traditions

Today is my 7 year old daughter’s ‘Dia-Birthday’. She was diagnosed exactly four years ago. Every year we do some sort of fun activity to celebrate her diabetes birthday (she recently asked if she gets presents, but I definitely have to draw the line somewhere). Our celebration usually involves going to a farm/ pumpkin patch since it is in October and we also let her pick the dinner that night.

When Halloween arrives at the end of the month we also get a secret visit by The Great Pumpkin. This is something I borrowed from another parent of a diabetic. My daughter goes trick or treating. We let her pick out a few of her favorite treats and then she puts the rest of candy bag on the front doorstep. Sometime during the night The Great Pumpkin trades it for a toy. Then, The Great Pumpkin (my husband) carts the candy off to work to get it out of the house. I love this tradition and so does my daughter.

Please share your diabetes traditions, I am curious to see what others do!

That’s a great tradition. About the only tradition I have was to run up and down the stairs at Thanksgiving to make room for the mashed potatoes? I’ve run a couple of Turkey Trots, with the same alterior motive, recently.

That is such a great idea… the great pumpkin. Very creative!
