I thought that by joining tudiabetes.org I might find a sense of support that is not found at the Doctor’s office. For example, within this community, I was hoping that people might share their actual experience in learning how to control their blood sugars and how they did it.
I feel that the only true way to learn is from ppl with experience. That’s how I learn best anyway. Tell me what you have done since being diagnosed and what regiment fits the best for you.
Does everyone count carbs that is diabetic? Does everyone abstain from eating sugary foods that is diabetic? What experience have you gone through, whether you learned about your diabetes or not from it?
Which Doctor type is the best? Who have you found to treat your disease? What have they prescribed?
I have always hoped to find a “meeting” place where other diabetics could share their experience. I hope tudiabetes.org can help me.
I am somewhat new to the site as well and it’s been very informative and I’ve learned a lot in the short time I’ve been on here. Let’s see, I’ve been diabetic most of my life so I basically grew up with it. I went on the pump 4 years ago and it’s made life much easier. I take homolog which is a fast acting insulin. I do carb count but noticed that I’ve been lazy and often have been rounding numbers instead of exact calculations. (bad habit) For meals now I generally use the square wave bolus b/c I was finding that the insulin would hit before the food and thus kept going low while eating. I strongly believe that you need to your own advocate and it seems common that the “world” is still very ignorant. That goes from family to doctors and everyone in between. You need to “own” your disease and work with it not against it. I’ve been both very low, as in Low on the glucometer and also very High with different and similar results. I think that with a new diabetic I would advise taking one day at a time and try not to be over whelmed by D. It can affect many things in your life and with time you’ll figure most of it out but you are also always learning. Hopefully you’ll have friends and family who will be supportive. A good site, like this one is a good outlet and can be very informative as I mentioned earlier. Hope this is helpful and I’ve found sending out a blog with questions get really good results. Cheers. Lisa
I am slowly learning to get out a person’s profile before answering a blog…which I didn’t do in case you’d not noticed, lol. But you know you can still be a “new” diabetic if it’s the time you’ve finally decided to work with the disease and not against it.
I actually found this site by searching for information generally on the web which directed me to some posts (like info on user experience with symlin). In general, try searching for topics, but also browse through groups because they can also have a lot of info too! For example there’s the group carb counting by example and another group that discusses included fat and protein into carb counts Tagers united.
One of the things I’ve learned is that everyone’s experience is so different and from personal experience the answers to your questions often changes over time (e.g., from using multiple daily injections which was more standard in the 80s to insulin pumping and CGM in the 2000s)
This is a vast resource of experienced diabetics and recently diagnosed. It’s a very helpful resource. I think you will find what you are looking for here. There’s a massive amount of experience here. If it’s on your mind, someone has had the same issue. There are some very smart folk here. I’ve learned so much since I found this site in July. It’s a good bunch of folks, too.
The first thing is not to get overwhelmed with all of the stuff that is out there. Any meds you take will take a little while to really start to work. Your own BgL can take a little while to adjust as well. You can have some sugar however you have to allow for it. Many ways to do it count the carbs is one way and exercise is another. Everyone is different and it may take time to figure it all out as what works for you but anything you do take it slow and give it a week to see the real results.
I see several doctors to maintain health my PCP is a internal specialist and a Endo plus RD.
Treatment is shots many of them.
This site can help you in many ways just have to take some time to learn how to adjust your life so that you can deal with it.
WELCOME!!! I really hope I can help you!!! Look at my blogs that should help a little and always feel free to come to my page with any questions. If I can’t answer them I will find someone who can. Again WELCOME!!! Don’t get bogged down with all the info out there. There’s alot just take it one step at a time and remember we’re here for you!
I do count carbs, and keep things to under 75 g of carbs a day. With that limitation to my carbs I have to abstain from all the sugary foods I used to love, like my home made rootbeer, and oreo cookies, and ice cream and … and also all the carby foods I love like most breads and rolls, and pancakes, but also rice which I used to eat with impunity, and cold cereal for breakfast. I had to purge my pantry. I gave all the unopened stuff to the local hunger warehouse, and threw the rest out.
But the good news is that the pain in my fingers and hips went away, gone, gone gone gone, and I have lost a pound a week since I started, I am down 17 lbs. And my blood glucose rarely goes above 150 these days.
Does everyone count carbs that is diabetic? In the strictest way i don’t. I am a T1 and was on N and R for a really long time and switched to lantus in the last one year. I just guess estimate.
Does everyone abstain from eating sugary foods that is diabetic? I used to avoid 80% of the time when i was on N and R. But now that i am on Novo rapid i just take an extra shot of insulin when i have a craving for them. Anyways i was never really fond of sweets all my life (i mean even before i was diabetic.) I prefer some thing really Hot (Like those extra wild buffalo wild wings!!! real Kick ass stuff!!!LoL!!) to sweet.
What experience have you gone through, whether you learned about your diabetes or not from it?“DISCIPLINE DISCIPLINE DISCIPLINE” I did have bad patches in the last 18 years as a diabetic. I just suck it up!!! My biggest (bad) experience extreme lows in 2008!!
Which Doctor type is the best?all u can expect from a doctor is correction to ur dosage and prescriptions. I visit a doctor twice a year. Don’t expect anything more from them. they don’t have answer to ur emotional issues!!!
Who have you found to treat your disease? “DISCIPLINE” Believe it or not if maintain a healthy routine …like don’t experiment with foods too much. create a preferred meal plan and try to stick to it as much as you can. This way u won’t have to adjust your dosage a lot. and don’t worry about putting the sugar level in a tight range. 70-100 fasting is good enough and <160 post meal is good enough. an average A1c of around 6-6.5 is pretty good!!!
What have they prescribed? Is there any medicine other than Insulin?? Remember take your shots at the precise time and have your meals at more or less the same time each day.
Thank you everyone for your support and comments. I feel at least a little better. I think I am the solution, but I struggle with choosing the right foods and staying strict to a routine. I guess I just need some simple DISCIPLINE as Chris puts it. After 16 years you’d think I could figure this stuff out. I really have a hard time carb counting and I was never able to stick with one doctor long enough to figure out where my ratio should be. - Moving, insurance - what not. I never got the gist of it, plus I don’t think I have come to terms with the fact that carb rich foods just aren’t the best idea for me. Blah. Thanks to your comments I realize that I am not the only one spending the day trying to figure out what foods I should eat and what foods I shouldn’t eat and how much insulin to take and what time to take it and when to eat and on and on and on.
Goal for me - keep it simple and don’t get overwhelmed or too hungry. (Craving time).
Has anyone ever tried a raw food diet? I wonder if it’s possible being a diabetic and I wonder if I could eat just raw foods?
With the present day insulins like lantus and aphidra which are highly accurate you do not have to switch to raw food. U can have pretty much any type of food (If u r weight conscious then its a different issue) as long as the insulin profile matches the food profile.
