Disappointed with myself

I was diagnosed in 2003 and the doctor I had then never once mentioned to me the importance of controlling my blood sugar readings. He also did not tell me that complications can happen if blood sugar is not well controlled.

I've been lucky in that I've met diabetic people in the online community that have been kind enough to share what they know about counting carbs and the importance of good control. My last A1C was under 6% for the first time ever. I don't think my next one will be so good.

Recently I saw my pulmonologist for my yearly sleep apnea check up. He ordered a CMP (complete metabolic panel). The results of the GFR portion of that test indicate that I have kidney disease. Every time any of the doctors I have had over the past 10 years have ordered blood work, they just say results are normal. None of them ever advised me to see a kidney doctor. I'm so disappointed with my own ignorance because if I had known better, maybe I could have delayed this complication. :(

You should be disappointed in your crappy doctor, not yourself. Getting your A1C down with little support from a doctor is a big feat and you should be proud!

Thank you for your comments. I was proud of my lower A1C however I don't know if that helps to 'delay' the progression of kidney disease.

AcidRock is right. Don't beat yourself up, that job belongs to D. Your job is to fight back. And you can only go forward, you can't change the past. Learn all you can about what is happening and work hard to keep your BG as normal as possible.

Of course it does! The more normal you keep your blood sugar, the less damage happens as a result!
