DM 1 Research: Are you between 18-35 year old?

Hello: My name is Denise Kent. I am a doctoral student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Nursing. For my dissertation research I am examining the self management behaviors of young adult, 18-35 years of age with Type 1 DM. I am particularly interested in researching young adults as there is very little research published that explores DM management in this age group.

I have a website http://www.dm1research.com that describes my study and links directly to the site where participants can complete the survey if they choose. The survey is online and completely confidential and takes about 20 minutes to complete. I need 150 participants to complete the survey for data analysis. I currently have 60surveys completed to date. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win $50 gift certificate for Amazon.com.

I am going to use this blog to record my study activities such as which DM communities I have explored and other organizations that I think would be useful to others.

Although I am far too old and creaky to respond to your survey, I do want to commend your efforts. Please don’t take this as in insult. I have to admit. I checked you out. You appear to be the “real thing.” You are listed on the faculty at University of Chicago Schol of Nursing. You are the CEO of a company Med Staff On Call. Your affort to obtain an advanced degree is admirable. I would hope that people respond to your call. And most of all, I hope that you do complete your degree and come back to help us diabetics. We very much need competent people not only to help us directly, but also train and educate the next generation.

I complete the survey. It is not mention that canadian aren’t accept for that survey so I think it is ok. Is 150 persons enough to have a representative sample of the population ?

Thank you for completing the survey. I have no geographical limits outlined for this study so any nationality is welcome. I will likely have more than 150 participants but the 150 is set as a minimuim based on the number of variables I am measuring.

My survey response has been very positive. After sharing that excitement with my research advisor replied that “we need to increase the number of participants.” I will still honor the gift card distribution at 150 but my new target is 200 to 300 participants.
