Does anyone else have high triglycerides?

My Cholesterol Results
HDL 62
CHOLESTEROL 125
TRIGLYCERIDE 44
LDL CALCULATION 55

My doc says it isn't the bg levles, but the amount of carbs you consume and the amount you exercize. Maybe another doc will say something else.

Triglycerides can also increase if your kidneys or liver are strained. If your kidneys are not workign properly, then your liver will work overtime to try to help out. According to my kidney doc, a byproduct of the liver overworking is the raising of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Also drinking alcohol, depending on the person and the health of their liver, can raise those numbers.

Great point with the alcohol. If you drink the night before a cholesterol test, that will also mess up the test.

Ok, here's my numbers, warts and all

Ok, trigs a little high. Doc says no more pizza and beer. No problem. But I will have shrimp on Superbowl Sunday. I'm no saint!

BTW, my pic is 6 yrs old when I was 35 pounds heavier.

I don't think there are any carbs in them. Per the label 2 tbs is 4 carbs, there are 4 g dietary fiber, 1 g soluble fiber and 3 g insoluble fiber. Tell me if I am wrong, I have only had them twice, one morning I was perfect and today I was low, but I also bolused for 5 cho just in case there were some hiding in there.

Sounds like it is pretty low carb. I think I would just kinda bolus for that if needed. If I were running on the lower side, I might just not bolus and correct if needed. They sound really good, I love muffin like goodies and that sounds like a really good alternative.

There is a great blog with Dr Michael Eades. He has a great diet that will lower bgs as well as trigs. Just google his name. He also has a great book called
PROTEIN POWER DIET. I think in general high trigs and high cholesterol is caused by high bgs. Do everything you can to cut out the carbs in your diet, especially grains and fruits.

Kelly the FLAX Muffins were AWESOME! I bolused for 4 grams of carbs, I don't usually subtract for fiber unless its more than 6 grams, and then I also had a 5 gram carb protein shake so I bolused for a total of 9 grams of carbs and it has held steady, no drops or anything. And the muffin was so filling too.

I am glad you loved them! I tried making a pumpkin pie flavored one this morning, but I am going to stick to the cinnamon for now. I want to put coconut oil in mine too, but I am too lazy to melt in the morning this time of year. What is your shake that you make?

Those are also known as "low carb microwave muffins". They are fantastic and the ingredients are completely substitutable. I went the pumpkin route as well (I keep pounds frozen for all things from soup to muffins), changing out the oil for 1/4 cup pumpkin. You'll have to experiment to get it just right. The variations are endless, though.

Lol I don’t make it. I’m lazy, it’s the Atkin’s Milk chocolate shake.

@Brian_BSC, are you taking Kirkland Enteric Coated Fish Oil by any chance? I take about 3-4 softgels daily. I just noticed noticed the label “Do not exceed 2 softgels per day”. Why?

There isn’t strong evidence that higher doses are beneficial. There are also suggestions that higher doses might have some adverse effects. Nonetheless I still take 4 a day.

My diabetes specialist has put me on a 150 carbs a day. I was diagnosed 6 months ago. I was 7.1 recently and 6.75 the previous 3 months. Should I reduce my carbs down to 30-40? I read to eat an apple a day and reduce your cholesterol by 40% somewhere…

Often our doctors go all ballistic over cholesterol levels but we should always try to make balanced decisions. When I looked at the CVD risks, cholesterol was a mild risk factor compared to high blood sugars. So I always tried to emphasize fixing my blood sugars before I worried about cholesterol.

That being said, having your doctor recommend 150 g carbs per day is actually pretty good. I was initially advised to eat at least 300g per day. No matter whether you choose to eat 150 or 30-40 grams per day you should be patient. Most of the information I have seen suggests that it takes months, perhaps 6-9 months to have your cholesterol levels normalize adjusting to your carb intake. Don’t expect anything immediate. You may see an immediate drop in triglycerides, but it may also take some time.

ps. And I’ve seen nothing that suggests that an apple reduces cholesterol.

Thank you for your input! I seen the Apple a day on one of those sites of what foods are good for you or some such…

@Gina5, 7.1% is still too high, it may be because you are insulin resistant and need to cut the carbs more. This normally shows with belly fat and that needs to go. Try no sugars including fruit/juice and no starches for a month, about 30-50g a day. If you still aren’t seeing normal numbers before your evening meal, you may need meds/more meds. the morning number takes longer to go down
