Does anyone have a job that interferes with caring for Diabetes?

thank you for your kind response. i am not sure what i am going to do at this point in time. they did this in march, that is after they cut my work week from 40+ to 3 hours a week.

I would talk to a lawyer… You still have time if it was march of 2010…

You will make it  keep us posted!!

Lots of Shots,

I’m glancing through some of the responses… and I need them as much as you do

I am a 28yr old Type 1 diabetic (dx 2/89). I teach high school math in an extremely needy school (oh, and I’m in the middle of a career change and am taking organic/biochemistry 2 nights a week for an additional 10hrs)… I too rarely have time to go to the bathroom…

Have you thought about the pump? or a CGM? While I know that the CGM material says we should not substitute it for bloodtesting, I have… as in I’m running steady or dropping like a rocket and need to take care of the diabetes and make my students wait. The pump has made “shooting up” less obvious as I just dial in the dose and keep running… and allows for days like today where I spent my lunch in the office with admin dealing with a situation that needed to have been dealt with Friday! While I do not like “ignoring” the diabetes, I feel a little more comfortable knowing that Larry (my DexCom) will yell at me if I really have to take care of something now (like the blood sugar dropping 50pts the last 15mins of school yesterday!).

I could say that my job gets in the way of me checking my sugar, but I really CAN take the time to do it, I am a RN at a hospital, and yes things can get pretty crazy…there have been days that I literally don’t go pee, but that’s my fault (I don’t do that anymore). But it is so easy to neglect myself all day since I am thinking and caring for 4-5 other people all day. I never want to use my diabetes as an excuse but at the same time I need to check my sugar and eat if I need to, thankfully I haven’t had any issues with my sugar at work…even with all the stress. If I were having ups and downs and couldnt seem to control it than I would look for another job. If you can’t take care of yourself you can’t take care of others!

This is a very late post. I am sorry… Between both of my things : school and working in the ER - I have found that nothing but self-advocacy is needed. Sure, I hear what you say - but, what will happen when you pass out or something from not taking care of yourself?

Okay lotsofshots- here are my suggestions:

  1. Get the Pump!!!

  2. Get real about taking care of yourself!! I had an extremely stressful job where I was also working for the people. I didn’t take care of myself, I got complications, I had to go out on disability, it sucks! You will suffer and your family will suffer more if you can’t work, than if you take a step back to take better care of yourself. Everyone else posted a lot of good advice, so that is all I will say.
    Get a pump!
    Take care of yourself!

So because someone has a postprandial of 200, that stands to reason that type 2s don’t need support??? I don’t get the algorithm. I don’t think it’s a “my number is worse than your number scenario”, besides…it’s all relative. Our sugars vary also…they spike, they dip, and we hit screaming highs, and bottom of the bird cage lows too. But it’s more than that…it’s being taken for real. Type 2 is as “real” as type one. Not the same…but just as real.

Linda I’m not saying that it’s not all reveleant you know me. I just wish this arguing about all this stuff quit. You know I support Type 2 as well as Type 1 (Of which I happen to be) I KNOW that you guys have highs and lows too.

you can delete your comments, too, but I think once things are said they should stay out there, so props to you for standing behind your words.

otherwise, you can either quit (boo!) or find positive ways to enjoy this community  I think you have some really good advices and insights to offer, but how you generalize Type 1’s after being generalized with Type 2’s is hypocritical and insensitive. There’s really not that much difference, and I’ve seen Type 2’s progress into Type 1 and actually get better from there because they needed an insulin regimen which their endos didn’t want to put them on because their pancreases made some (but not nearly enough!) insulin.

anyway, i digress. There isn’t a “tuTYPE1diabetes.org” and a “tuTYPE2diabetes.org”, because we’re all diabetics, and we get enough ignorance and hatred from other people that we don’t need it in these forums, right? hugs

So…let us now GET BACK TO THE TOPIC (see above title) and away from the type 1/type 2 saga!

I think I have it pretty good a work, now that I’ve been granted two 15 min. breaks in the day…up and above my 3/4 hour lunch.

That said…I still keep rescue snacks in my classroom. The break are great for, you know…nature’s call or mental health!

The problem is more with field trips and the likes!
