Does insertion hurt with dexcom?

My Classic tag puncher arrived yesterday and I think it is going to be slightly too small. It will be easy to trim it to make the hole slightly larger, but I am a little bummed. The other one was definitely too large so I prefer this one. But it’s not perfect from what I can tell. This is definitely a #firstworldproblem.:slightly_smiling_face:

Hi all, newbie here, for me it hurts like crazy when inserting the G5 sensor, I am almost considering stop using it because it hurts so much. I usually insert it quite slowly because it feels that the pain should be less then and I use it in my stomach. Any tips on how I can make it stop hurting?
Stay safe y’all

Have you considered upgrading to G6? Insertion is much easier and less painful.

In US, Dexcom will stop shipping the G4/G5 sensors at end of 2020.

I will get the D6 in about 3 months, it is the same here in the Czech Republic where I live at the moment, but for now I have to live throught the pain, considered some local anastesia but dont know if I could get that over the counter.

For me, slow is worse, prolongs the pain, but everyone is different. I never found the G5 pain that bad though, more like discomfort, but tolerable, so my experience may not translate.

I will try to do it faster next time to see if there is any difference, I think I am the person with the lowest pain threshold in the whole of Europe =D

I always found the G5 insertion a bit painful and the procedure more psychologically stressful because it’s so manual. The G6 is much easier and I almost never feel anything other than the snap of the inserter itself. Of course you can always hit a bad spot. If the pain persists, contact Dexcom. They’ll tell you to swap it out, and they’ll send you a new one.

Yeah, I think it is alot because I do it manually as well, I used Freestyle Libre earlier and I had no issues at all with that one, it was just smack in without any problems.

Yeah if you haven’t tried doing it quickly, definitely try it. Slowly is going to draw it out. One of the reasons the G6 hurts less is that it’s automated so it’s extremely fast, faster than anyone could insert a G5, so it’s in and out before you know it.

What do you do when it hurts, do you pull it out and will tandem replace it if you do? Sometimes my cannula insert hurts to the point where it’s not bearable and I have to pull it out. It must have hit a nerve or something. I don’t get it replaced because the cost is not worth the time on the phone but if it’s a sensor it’s a different story

Yeah, that’s a great point. And with an expected lifespan of 10 days (versus about 3 for an infusion set), that’s a long time to put up with being uncomfortable.

I end up being much less “adventurous” with the placement of my sensors and stick with places I know work well and are comfortable. I’m probably missing out on some great sites, but the risk feels too high if I try somewhere and it doesn’t work well or hurts too much.

I’m actually not sure if Tandem or Dexcom would replace a sensor for it being uncomfortable. Does anyone else have experience with that?
