Hello fellow diabetics…
I control my food cravings by giving in to them. Yes… I eat them in sensible, manageable portions, and ONLY under certain rules. I wrote a long rant about it, once here… it was mostly about how I hate dieting, but basically, dealing with eating, period. lol http://www.tudiabetes.org/profiles/blogs/my-big-diabetes-diet-secret
I have to aree with Duck and Lizmari on this one. When you deprive yourself of certain foods, you only want them more. Give in but don’t go overboard. Those 100 calorie snacks come in handy for me. I still get the taste of my favorite goodies but Im not over doing it. On GMC the other day, Dr. Oz said, “when you want something sweet, have a small piece and drink water right after. It washes the taste of the sugar off your taste buds and you want want anymore”. I dont know how true that is, but the more water you drink, the more sugar you’re flushing out of your system so it works for me.
i keep my snacking to 15 grams of carbs per hour. there are a lot of snack that fit into the 15 grams of carbs. I look at calories second and carbs first.
I eat those little bags of mm’s. I think one little bag is about 15 grams of carbs, 1 small box of juice is 15 grams. 2 G2 are 16 grams of carbs. As far as frozen treats I do travel into the 20 grams of carbs realm and have frozen fruit bars those are 20 grams of carbs.
For popcorn they have those 100 calorie bags that are 21 grams of carbs.
they have granola bars that are chocalate covered and some which chocalate chips and they range from 17 grams of carbs to 20 grams of carbs.
So I still have chocolate and all kinds of other goods and I limit my carbs but I dont do low carbs.
so my point the more research you do, the more you’ll find you can tolerate. Also I do still eat regular ice cream on occation but now these days a lot fo places have the smaller portions and the kiddie sizes. I shoot for those to calm the cravings for ice cream.
Just work on adjustment and not on exclusion
take care
Nighttime snacking while watching TV with my husband is my worst enemy as well…especially while he’s sittin next to me eating all the good stuff lol! I keep my nighttime snacking limited to turkey, sliced cheese, sliced cucumber, celery w/cream cheese, sugar free hard candy (love the baskin robbins ones), almonds or peanuts, and pork rinds. I personally never splurge because if I have a bite I will want it all! After 9 months of not having anything I’m not supposed to I never even crave it which is huge coming from a carb/sugarholic that’s all I used to eat! Yes it looks good if it’s in front of me but I do not crave it.
I try to stay generally low carb, and have made some adjustments which work pretty easily for me; I don’t notice much of a difference. For my favorite meal, egg + toast, I have taken to substituting egg on top of ham instead. And the other no- and low-carb things listed here, though I have also added dark chocolate. In spite of the relatively low #s of carbs listed, I find that dark chocolate does very little to my bg levels. And I have come to pretty much only be able to tolerate dark chocolate now. I used to not care that much, milk vs dark, though my tastes have converted to only dark.
My downfall is Reese cups, so I hunt for the big bags of Minni’s and just one mini works for me. I have also gone for the Peanut Butter on the spoon, which is 7 Gm for 2 TBS. that holds my interest for 1 hour. I will read the Nutrition Labels on my favorites and fixed them to small portion sizes and if possible place them in plastic bags or divided containers. I do this a lot for traveling and parties when I know the menu. The secret is want to comply and still enjoy yourself. If I am going out for any meal, I will check my BG and take that insulin if needed so it will be working while I am eating. Once there I can nibble on a cracker for a long time. If portions are large I ask for a take home container and re size my portions. That container can sometimes last 2 meals or one meal and freeze the rest for later. I’ll take BG about 2 hrs after eating and (knock on wood) my results are in range I take my Insulin and have been fine with no highs. The one big Factor is portion size and heavy on the veggies. That works for me. Good luck!!!
Ha ha sounds exactly like me!
Do you mean that it is your meals that isn’t really good for you? Becuase if you make an home made “normal” meal (houseman diet we call it in Sweden), than it is okey to eat some dessert afterwords. But maybe not every day :).
Some other advices when you feel the craving:
eat one - two bite dark chocolate…or
chewing gum…or
fruit
