I went for my 20 week scan today. I'm 20 plus 1 today. The baby is measuring 22 plus 5! Ob said that that doesnt change my due date or anything (they're pretty sure about dates because its an IVF pregnancy). I asked is that why I'm so big as everyone is telling me I'm huge for 20weeks. Anyway, the reason why I'm so big is because there is LOTS of amniotic fluid. He showed me a graph. The "normal" and "elevated" amounts were way down the screen, the amount I have was near the top of the graph, ridiculously high...
Anyway, the OB didnt seem overly concerned. He asked how my diabetes control is. I recently had my best HbA1c ever: 5.9. I know they measure fructosamine too and they like that at 250. My last one was 270 but the endo wasnt overly concerned about that. I'm having more blood tests next week.
I've just looked it up online and it says that its common in the 3rd trimester, well, not common but thats when it happens....
Should I be freaking out? Is that my control isnt as good as I thought? Has anyone else had this?
I haven’t had weird fluid levels - but at 29 weeks I’m measuring 32.5. They said that the baby wasn’t fat, he was just big. And considering that I’m 6 foot and so is my hubby, and half our family is very tall - some babies are just big. Even then he said that measuring that far ahead (3.5 weeks early) that still only put him in the 75% range for size.
My three year old girl (who is a skinny little toughy) is always in the 85% to 95% range just because she is taller and stronger than most kids her age. It just depends on the kid and the genes for the most part.
My husband was a 12 lb baby (his poor mother) so that might have something to do with the baby being a bit big. Doesnt explain the amniotic fluid though… Thanks for the reply.
I had excess amniotic fluid with both. Very common for diabetics. No alarm though. As far as measuring big, your babe might not be. A lot has to do with preconceptions on the part of the medical professional assuming your baby will be huge. They told me that mine’s would be huge. I knew they weren’t gonna be as I managed my diabetes quite well. My first was 6 lb 5 oz. My second was 7 lb 6 oz. Try not to sweat it.
I’m glad you feel better. With both they wanted to take them early for fear of being too large from what they measured on the ultrasound. Like I said, obviously a lot of their measurements is guesswork cause 6 and 7 lbs is definitely not too big. Although, I really do carry a lot of fluid! In fact, with my last girl they had to break my water twice cause I was carrying so much. No complications though. You’ll do great, I’m sure!
