Exercise and higher blood sugar

Does anyone else experience an increase in their blood sugar after exercise?

Tonight I was 105 before working out. I checked after( about an hour) and I was at 120. I have not eaten since 6:30pm and the 105 was actually my after dinner number....

Is this normal?

Thanks

Yes, very common.

Glucose meters are inaccurate by +-20%. The same drop of blood can give you a result of 105 or 120. Please do not worry too much!

True, glucose meter issues could give you a false reading, but elevated BG after exercise is a well documented issue. Either way, it’s not too much to worry about. If your BGs have a tendency to rise after exercise, however, it’s something to plan for. A lot depends on the type and duration of the exercise you engage in so lot’s of testing will be helpful in resolving both glucose meter issues and BG/exercise issues.

This is common. I am sure there will be some body that can explain this better but I will try my best.

I believe it is refered to as a glucose dump. What happens is your liver will desposit glucose into your system if you are getting low on energy. This is the normal function of the liver. When you exercise, have not eaten or in a stressful situation your body will metabolize glucogen into glucose and “dump” the glucose into the blood stream to keep the energy levels high. Basically when you exercise you are putting your body in a stressful situation so it was preparing to give you all the energy you need.

Please remember BS maintainence is not an exact science and lots of goofy things will occur. But this is how all bodies react to exercise at one time or another.

I hope this helps.

I just started working out in the morning before breakfast (so I def. have an empty stomach at this point) and I have been having the same thing happen. Some kind of hormones or released…I read that in one of my books.
