Exercise and type 2

What exercises are good and how they work on the glucose.

I exercise on a Gazelle. It is not hard on the knees and kinda fun if you want to know the truth. My sister has lost about 80 lbs on that machine.

I walk 1.5 miles every day and practice yoga three times a week. I have my diabetes well under control, but I am still having trouble with exercise. I went hiking on Friday and half way through felt pretty woozy. I tested my BG and it was 97, so I am not sure what was going on. Any suggestions?

Almost two hours Mountain Biking twice every weeks. It’s enough to control my BG! And I feel better, at least.

I walk 30 to 45 minutes a day(when the weather is nice)

I’m here for support. You all need to kick me in the booty - I need to start walking 30 minutes each day!

One question Becky. What is a Gazelle?

Oyvind, sorry, I just now got your question, I havent been on this website much lately. A Gazelle her in the US is a machine that has 2 places to put your feet. It has 2 tall bars to hold on to the tops of. The arms go back and forth, while the feet go back and forth. Its called a Gazelle, because it is made by a man by the name of Tony Gazelle. Here he advertizes it on TV. I will look for the website and get back with you. I have not been very good about getting on it lately, because it is in my grandsons room and he always has company, and we have a very small house so that was the only place I could put it. But my sister lost 80 lbs on it. I will get back with you. Becky

Oyvind. go to either ebay and put in the gazelle and do a search. Or go to www.tonylittle.com I am sorry I thought his last name was Gazelle. That was a senior moment! Anyway, on that website if you will look under products you will see on the left the Gazelle. There is a girl on it with a yellow workout suit. This is a very good machine. It is not hard on the knees. Thats the great part about it. If you need any other information just let me know. It works really good when you use it, which that is what I need to do. I am going to have to move it. Its great to have you as a new member, and welcome. By the way, I love your pictures. Very pretty wife!!!

I have worked and walked off quite a bit of weight… but now I need a kick in the tooshie to get motivated again. HELP!

I use some light weight training, stationary bike, and treadmill. Motivation is very hard to come by. What time of day works the best for you?

Walking is always a good start but not always all that desirable this time of year depending where you live. I was going to the gym but work is just making it more and more difficult. I may apply some of my tax refund to building out a little “fitness center” in my garage. Some mats, a bowflex and maybe a recumbent stationary bike. I do some core stuff in there now but dont really have any gear for resistance training or cardio so i pay the gym 50 a month for that :frowning:

Right now I walk for my exercise. I’m hoping that when I lose some weight (8lbs since being diagnosed 4 weeks ago and cutting carbs WAY down) I can add some different activities.

I would like to buy a treadmill. Has anyone done any research on a good brand/model? I live in the PNW (Seattle) and with our weather (wait 5 minutes, it will change) having a treadmill for the days the weather outside is not great would help me stay consistent with my plan for exercise. Any recommendations?

Well with exercise equipment, it really depends what you want to spend and what is important to you. The Proform stuff is pretty good, I had one. It was a bit loud however. We had this idea of putting it in the family room and one could walk while we watched a movie…didnt workout so well. You may want to keep this in mind if you live in a apt or condo that isnt on the ground floor as well.

if you shoot for the 500$ range you may not be overly happy down the road, noise, falling apart, or my favorite, the belt slipping to one side no matter how much you adjust it.

I would check out craigslist, there are alot of folks selling off their home gyms to pay the bills these days, there is some good quality stuff out there as well.

I may be getting a recumbent bike next month to get some cardio in between meetings, the Schwinn 230 is in the 500 range and whisper quiet. The recumbant bikes are great for “multitasking” as well. Reading a book, tv, with this thing i could even be on a conference call while pedaling away

Thanks Jerry, I thought about Craig’s list too and will check it out.
have a great day.

I have a question for anyone who can answer. I am type 2, and sometimes when my bs gets to like 98 I start feeling a little woozie and shaky, should I be glad I am at 98 or not? I guess what I am trying to say, is that when I get to 98, not only do I get a little shaky, but I start worrying that is going to go real low. It never has, but I just have that fear. Becky

Well ive know about diabetes all about a month, but I get the same thing. As I understand it, your body gets accustomed to higher levels so sudden drops, while “in a normal range” can make you feel hypo. I typically have a little snack if i feel hypo even if my number is “good”. Ill drop my BG about 40-50 points sometimes on a good workout day (2-3hrs at the gym) so I make sure i get some slow carbs are protein before heading to the gym if my BG is anything less that 110. (and i take my glucose tabs with me as well)

becky 98 is a real good number and IMHO should not give you low symptons like that unless you have a sudden drop in blood sugar to reach 98. sudden drops will make you feel pretty nasty IMHO

Agreed, my educator pointed this out, big changes will affect how you feel, also what is a “normal” BG for you… Im learning to get my BG down and sometimes feel hypo in the 80-90’s

Hi… just looking for good info on controlling Type2 with exercise. Mainly trying to walk lots + aquafit. Tried badminton, I loved it, but it was too hard on my knees.
