Failure after Failure

I started new pods, and am just getting failure after failure! I can’t get Insulet on the phone! I’m so frustrated. This was not happening on the old pods. I only fill to 150u, I fill on a flat surface, I get all the air out! WTF am I doing wrong?!?! So frustrated!!!

I have found that when filling the pod it helps to go very slow

I just started on the new pods after being on the old for 3 years. I have only used a few so far, but have not had any failures. I use the whole 200 units and can only get about 2 1/2 days (insulin resistant). I too fill the pod slowly. If you can't get ahold of Omni, try finding out who your local Omni rep or educator is from your endo's office. They should be able to help. Good luck, this diabetes can be a frustrating beast sometimes. Hank

I don't mean to sound trite but - this is what they show in the video - are you putting the pod to the right side of the PDM and having it touch during priming? They are pretty specific about that in the video, and a friend of mind was having all sorts of priming errors until she did it that specific way. She doesn't have the errors anymore. I don't why that would help but worth a try if you're not already doing it.

You are more than likely doing nothing wrong. I haven't started my new pods yet but have seen many posts about pod failures with the new system. Others aren't having problems. Guess they need to work the bugs out!! It is very frustrating trying to get ahold of anyone at Insulet at this point while they are doing the whole transition thing!! I had to sit on hold for about a half hr after having left three messages on three different days to get ahold of someone that could help me. Good Luck!!

In addition to what the others have asked, are you using room temp insulin? That can throw errors as well if you are using cool/cold insulin straight out of the frig.

Hope you are able to get a pod to work for you soon!

I agree on this one. The newer pods, which I just started, seem less robust internally. Which I'd expect due to the size change, so no biggie there. But I usually hear the beeps with only 1/2 of the insulin pushed in. Very slowly. That will keep the mechanisms from getting messed up from too much pressure. Hydraulic pressure is a very powerful thing, so use it carefully.

I sure hope they get all the bigs out of them prior to comi g to Canada. Been on the old pods a month now no failers and loving it now only if I did not test so much I might forget I’m diabetic for a while. Lol
Sorry you are havi g a difficult time hopefully it will change for you real soon

It would be interesting to see how many old pod users are having errors compared to people who started on the new system. Could be that the previous way of priming the pod is different enough from the new system that it requires a new way of doing things to avoid errors.

There does seem to be a difference in filling. The old pod would take the whole syringe full of insulin, slightly over 200u. The new one, according to what I have read on this sight, will only accept 200u exactly. I have only had a few new ones and have not tried the whole syringe. When I am priming, I leave the pod in the package and just touch the package (not the pod) to the left side of the pdm. So far so good.

I too have just started and I am having the same problems. 3 Pod failures in a row. I guess I just fill it slower?? I haven't had the chance to call, but I am hoping they don't give me problems.

I've been lucky so far - no priming problems and 2 shut downs after a few hours. Try calling tech service after hours, this seems to cut down on wait time considerably. Next time you reorder, get a direct number or extension. This helps. Even if you go to voicemail they seem more responsive.

I just filled my first new pod. Filled it like you, and what I did with the old ones. As much as the syringe could hold. Filled it slowly, like I usually do. No errors on priming, and no errors yet. Room temp insulin, though I don't always do that with the old ones. One pod is statistically worthless, so I'm not sure if I'm lucky or what yet...

I would be frustrated too! I think all of the previous suggestions are good ones, but if you are following those already, it may be that you have a bad lot. My son started in June and his lot seems to be fine, but I am seeing a lot of chatter on facebook with people having the exact same issues as you. For the most part, they seem to have lot #s beginning with 404. Ours is 403. Will soon be re-ordering and keeping my fingers crossed that the next batch we get is okay. Hope you can get it sorted out quickly!

Not to throw a monkey wrench in anybody's plans here, but I've been filling the new pods exactly the same way I filled the old pods. My syringe is emptied well before the pod beeps. I use just the above the minimum amount of insulin though, probably 90 to 95 units max.

I've used 12 new pods so far, no priming failures.

I don't see any wrench, you seem to be proving the slow fill issue. Consider you fill your pods less than 1/2 full, filling before the beeps seems to match what others do in filling the pods 100% full and beeping 1/2 way to filled? Makes sense you've not seen any problems. Error on the side of caution is usually best.

I had 80% failure on my first box. Some of those were partial failures. they lasted somewhere between 1 and 3 days. No priming errors, mostly while bolusing. They told me to not even use the last pod since the box was apparently defective. I had already put it on and sure enough about 16 hrs later it failed. They are replacing everything. I am now on the first pod out of my 2nd box and anxious to see if this one does better. It's the same lot number, so is my 3rd box. #40420 My last two calls to insulet only required waiting maybe 10 min. on one call and less than 5 min. on the other. I call late in the evening or early on a weekend, like a Sunday. I think calling middle of the day would be a problem and I don't have the time nor the minutes on my phone to wait for long. I gave up on leaving a message, that doesn't seem to work anymore. They have always been pleasant with me.

I have never tried to quantify how fast or slow I'm filling my pods, especially relative to others, but I'd say I probably fill it on the fast side relative to what is being suggested.

When I say "well before", I mean that if I filled a full syringe, whether the pod would beep first or I finish filling the pod first would probably be a wash.

I think I can afford to fill a pod completely just to see. Maybe I'll give it a shot with my next pod change in a couple of days.

Stay tuned.

I just looked they are all 404s!!!

I have two boxes of 4044s that I haven’t started yet. I’m definitely opening those tomorrow for my next pod change. My 4043s worked fine.
