Finally, competition in the tubeless pump market!

I did wonder about waterproofness . . .

VERY curious about this. i saw the video and was very confused with how this thing works. scratches head is the base supposed to stay on me for 3 months? cuz that’s kinda gross…and what if i get an infection or the adhesive comes off?

i do like the idea of being able to detach though. i’m hoping it goes so far as to only knock off that part if i ever run into a wall or something (it’s happened, sadly, haha).

i ordered a demo kit though! can’t wait to see it.

btw, does anyone know if the solo remote is also a meter? that would suck having to carry the remote AND a meter around :frowning:

I am pretty sure that it would not be waterproof though, because they don’t say anything about it, and with a more complicated device than the pod itself, it would almost seem impossible! They also don’t market that HUGE looking remote as being a meter, which is also a great selling point. I wouldn’t consider it competition yet, because it is not even available for use…
-And what is with being 18? I still ordered a demo anyways.

The age restriction is just bizarre.

Isn’t that fairly typical for new devices? It’s tested and approved for adults first and children next? I believe they intend to get approved for children.

Normally the age is 12 even for DRUGS. You would think that anyone who has used a pump a day in their life would be able to use almost any pump.

The CGMS all started at 18 and only medtronic’s is approved for under 18. I think that’s standard for these things. I’m 26 and looking at pumps and know plenty of other 18+ who would be so there’s a significant number of us now. I’d say at this point demand for under and over 18 is probably pretty much split down the middle. Now, most of the 18+ crowd still like tubes for some reason, guess it’s what they’re used to.

but to think how many children that would be looking for a first pump… Maybe I’m just biased because I’m not 18 yet
I am a potential customer though, but I am sure in a year and a half, there will be something better than the solo.

Has anyone gotten their demo kit? What comes in it?

That seems highly likely – either an improved OmniPod with Dexcom integration, or a Medtronic spin on a patch pump.

I think the Solo falls short in that it lacks integration with any sort of blood glucose meter / CGMS. If only we could merge the best aspects of each of these pumps!

They aren’t actually shipping them yet. They only received FDA approval last week (from what I understand). Their website went online on Monday, today and tomorrow they’re presenting the pump at a conference, and then by September (from what I’ve heard) they hope to be shipping out demo kits. You can order one now, but we won’t know what they look like until after they ship them.

An interview with Medingo from T1DPodcast has the Medingo rep clearly saying that the brains part is the only part that lasts 90 days. The cradle (cannula) and reservoir are changed every three days. Nothing is attached to you directly for 90 days.

She also stated it’s 25% smaller than a Pod.

The battery is in the reservoir which is changed every three days.

Unable to answer the waterproof question. Still being tested. “Objective to be like every other pump on the market.” Shower proof but may not be able to swim with it.

Does not have a meter currently. In development.

Software in development.

A separate usability had to be completed for children - that is complete. One more usability needs to be completed for children in the next month. Expect to be applying for pediatric clearance in October.

The interview is on iTunes by Scott Herring at T1DPodcast. Episode 8.

I responded in another solo thread, before seeing this one :stuck_out_tongue: It does look neat with having the detachable insulin resevoir, but…not being waterproof AND not having a meter built into the PDA is a deal killer for me. Too spoiled with omnipod having the meter to figure out everything for me  As faye said, having to carry a meter AND a PDA…no thanks

Received my demo kit via FedEx today. Only comes with a sample pump…no fake controller. The OmniPod demo kit came with a CD shaped like the PDM so, at least, you had an idea of it’s size.

Tony…if you’ll go back to earlier replies, you’ll see some size comparisons.

just got my demo kit this afternoon and it is MUCH smaller than the omnipod which has me very excited. One of my biggest complaints about the omnipod is how visible it is under clothes etc. I’m very interested in learning more about the solo (how much$$$ for example…) and am thrilled to see we’re heading in this direction!

I got my Solo demo kit as well. For me it is still too big, though definitely seems smaller than the OmniPod. I think that it would still be visible under my clothes. But I guess I am a happy tubed pumper!

I just don’t understand how some people have so much trouble with knocking off pods. I mean, I play sports like racquetball, softball, etc and never lose a pod. The only time I’ve knocked one off was wrestling with my 3-year-old son, because hi foot caught on it as he pushed off. I do yard work every week, climb around in my attic or work on my car - none of these activities result in a lost pod.
I’m really dumbfounded by the difference between me and the few people that seem so prone to losing pods…
