First post!

Don’t you just hate it when you people (non-diabetics, usually) hear you say something about diabetes and go “Yeah, I once had high blood pressure” or something stupid? Soooo anoying!

There is an entire class of standard lines we hear, that have been the subject of numerous discussion threads. Just a small sampling:

“At least you don’t have the bad kind.”
“At least it isn’t cancer.”
“Can you eat that??”
“My aunt had that and she [insert horrible outcome here].”
“Do you need insulin?” (to someone experiencing a low)"
“You’re too thin to have diabetes.”
“If you switch to [insert name of diet here] you can cure it. My friend did.”

…and countless others.

Welcome to TUD @Sol2! And yeah, I guess the reason comments like that particularly annoy is because either you have to spend a lot of time trying to explain why it’s not the same to someone who probably isn’t paying much attention and doesn’t really care, or just let it stand and change the subject to something else, leaving them their ignorance uncorrected. Probably the second option is best, but sometimes it rankles.

Let’s not forget, “I wouldn’t be able to inject myself if I was diabetic” , like it comes with a choice. To which I reply, wow that’s brave of you to choose death over injections, I’d be more scared to die! It usually shuts them up, :joy::joy::joy:

I once heard someone say, “I’d die if I had to give myself shots!”, I responded, “No, you have that backwards: you’d die if you didn’t.” Aside from an annoyed look, there was no response.

My favorite reply on the shots thing is that I’m glad my eyesight is good because the idea of sticking a contact lens or anything else on my damn eyeball totally freaks me out. I find it almost impossible just to squirt some Visine in there.

I once got the “what’s that?” from the wife of a friend of mine when she noticed my Omnipod for the first time. She knew I had diabetes, but had little understanding of what that meant, nor any desire to understand what that meant. After I explained what it does and what its for, I got the “Eeeeeww, gross - I could never do that.” “Yes, you could, I responded, if that’s what keeps you alive.”

Wow, all those replies! That was fast!

I get a lot of “I could never do that” or “HOW did you get through that?!” when telling the story of my journey through my eye complications. I usually respond with either “trust me, you could if it was your only option” or “I didn’t really have a choice”.

That’s one of the best comebacks I have heard. Do you mind if I steal that one.
