Flying with diabetes?

Im going to Oklahoma City to get my diabetes alert dog, Shyla, in 10 days. My mom and I are flying out there, because she has a bad hip and cant drive long distances. I was wondering how flying with diabetes works...Im a type 1 on the animas ping pump. The only time Ive ever flown was on my neighbors small 6 seater plane. And of course with that, there was no security to go through. What does security do with diabetes anyway?

Honestly, Im a bit freaked out about flying on a real plane for the first time...

You should have your endo give you a letter staing that you need to carry what ever supplies you use. There is another thread where alot of people have commented on this. I myself travel quite a bit. I was on the minimed and now the omnipod with the dexcom cgm. The pod and the sensor goes thru the scanner no problem. I put everything else in the trays and send it thru xray with never a problem. Some one did mention that for some reason the animas pump may set off the scanner. Wear it in a place that is easy to show them and remove from your pants or shirt collar.

Oo, exciting!!!

Never had to travel with a pump, but I’ve never had any issues whatsoever with any of my D supplies. They go in my carry on and stay with me at all times.

Other than that I can count on my BG going up and stays up. Travelling by plane is one of the few things that stresses me enough to screw with my BG in that way. If your BG responds adversly to stress, you might want to make preparations. The thing about travelling by plane, it can go smoothly, or it can be horrendous, with delays and unexpected changes happening all the time. I think it’s just safe to carry any emergency supplies with you and not worrying about airlines having anything you would need.

Brandi - Rest easy. I agree with 870allamerican on all points.
Go to www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/special needs/editorial_1374.shtm#3 to learn about security. They may hold a wand to you, but that doesn’t mean anything. Don’t let your stress raise your BGs! The TSA isn’t there to frustrate you.
Sit back and enjoy your flight! You’ll be adding an hour on the way and decreasing an hour on the way back; it’s not enough to do anything about.

hey i totally didnt think about it messing with my blood sugars! idk why, it just never crossed my mind. thanks for the tip!

My mom is working on getting a letter from my endo
So would you reccomend keeping my pump on while going through security, or taking it off? I was told X rays can mess it up, and my parents dont want to take any chances with it…
