so here I am freaking out why my blood sugar is on a roller coaster, then one of those poor african kid commericals comes on TV and i bawl my eyes out… (what the hell Jill) …then it hits me…wait its totally the beginning of the month…well THAT makes sense. Anyways has anyone experienced significant problems with their blood sugars during pre-menstruation? I know mine go on a little parachuting trip.
My DD has the same issue (all though she doesn’t have the crying). But her BG run high during her Monthly.
My doctor recently shared that on average the week before blood sugars will be HIGH and the week during they will be low-normal.
I’ve actually seen this myself.
Isn’t the crying normal?
haha oh yeah i cry all the time before it starts, people often get irritable mood swings but i cry
Yeah I experience high just before and it doesn’t help that my appetite is out of control as well.
yes! I go from 12 units of Lantus during the first two weeks of my cycle, and 20 units during the last 2 week of my cycle. I now track my cycle along with my blood sugars in Excel; I was thinking of generating some charts from the data and looking at trends.
Day 2 of my cycle seems to give me a very exciting LOW!
Same here, my bg’s go up the week before and then as soon as it arrives my numbers are back to normal. I have different basal settings on my pump for that week.
I am so happy to see this posting. A few years ago when i discussed what was happening to me during my cycle, he told me he had never heard of such a thing. I have since found a new, more knowledgeable endo. The gynocologist i work with has told me that i may have to have a hysterectomy to finally gain control. i experience very similar things as what you guys are saying. As soon as my cycle arrives, my glucose will be so easy to control but the week to 10 days beforehand is awful. my insulin usage can actually double much of the time and i still never obtain good control because it is almost like i become a little “resistant” as well. I will be interested in seeing if anyone posts in the future who has had a hysterectomy and what their control was like afterward. i am just so afraid i will do it and my control could be even worse! LOL. fear of the unknown i suppose. thanks for being on here.
Hi Jill, After 12 years here is what I found and thankfully all my Endo’s have confirmed that some women go through this also every month. My BG bottoms out after my period. Then about 10-14 days at the time of ovulation I get a couple days where it won’t come down and have to increase my basel insulin about 20%. Then it starts to level out for about another 5 days then I start a steady increase of basel trying to stay ahead of the rising BG not chase it. When I get around the day to start I stop my daily increase I am about at 50% increase of my Basel at this time.
The first low BG happens 4 to 6 days in and back to my low basel rate. It it hard to predict and it messes my A1C I am still trying to perfect it. Also the increase of progesterone slows your digestion almost giving you a slight Gastroparesis effect on your BG so you get that BG that seems like it it bent never to come down after you eat so you may want to eat easier to digest foods at that time it has helped me.
I hope this helps you if you can get ahead of the rise it helps but it does take time to figure it out.
Be well and be loved
